I should do sunday evening films more often (i feel like i say this each time i go) but i should, because they are fun. & this sunday the 5:30 timing is perfect to go & watch Supergirl at the end of a busy weekend when we all need to chill out a bit. Also our heat wave has finally calmed down, it rained last night woohoo.
Screen 1 id say was half full which is pretty good. Proper mix of ages, teenagers in groups, families with kids aged about 8, millennials & even a few boomers. Which is good.
Trailers, the digger trailer thats not a digger trailer, but is all of Tom Cruises career, that was on, the room went silent for that & of course for the odyssey, i mean i pause each time. We also had spiderman & moana & the hunger games.
& then the film started… if this was any film is phase 2 of the mcu youd have all lapped this up.
John Wick would have approved to the pup loyalty in this film. He would have done. I mean i get it. I do. My sisters Pup puts things in perspective a little so i get that if someone had done this to Lando Pup we would let out all hell for him too. Krypto is a very cute dog.
Millie puts in a really solid performance as super girl. Shes sarcastic & stubborn enough that you know shes not going to be a female version of superman, & i like that most of it is also her kicking arse in normal clothes, it makes the reveal later on when she fights people more powerful in that dress. I dont get why people got so angry at her casting & this film. She did a bloody good job.
The problem though is in the story tellign because except for her & the dog, i didnt care about anyones outcome we met on the way. Be it the girl after revenge, or the average generic baddy who collect brides & make a poison only they can cure, not even Jason Momoa turning up & being well him & not aqua man was enough to make me care. He did look like he was having fun on that bike causing chaos. Everyone we met just felt like they were disposable & didnt make me go oh no when there was peril happening to them.
I am getting fed up of having mid level villains now action movies. Spiderman had better deliver soon with theirs as its been left out the trailers a lot. This guy just irritated me & i didnt hate him enough to be like oh he gets what he deserves, he was just there to make her look good. I mean in the last film Nicholas Holt owned the bad guy so why did we go back to this.
I liked the different suns that was cool & clever way to show how she could be effected & how she wasnt all powerful.
We set up a wider DC world under James Gunn with this. Visiting different planets & talking about other characters, means its not just going to be all super man, but it felt the planet hoping at times was very rushed. & i hate to say it but there was one bit with some space pirates that felt very guardians about it all, but because the guardians did it first with him it felt a little bit like oh okay we are doing this again. I get directors & film (especially super hero ones) have a certain thing they need to portray but this really was just like Yondu coming to highjack something.
Some of the action pieces were really good. There was one that went on far to long, but they were well staged & the different levels of danger were very clear to see. Also they werent all in the dark, there was one in some dust as well.
This film wanted to invite you into the DC universe but also felt distant which is a like super girl but if your trying to get people back from the mcu now its slowing down & isnt finding its direction a bit then you need to up it a little more than this for the casual viewer.
This was a lot of fun & i did have a good time watching it, but i did just want a little bit more from it. Fingers cross next years super man movie is stronger than this.
