The world cup is now in full flow. My Letterboxd is wondering why the reviews have dried up. My DVDs are like play me & im sure Netflix thinks ive ran away. My only viewing other than sport at the moment is shorts & Cinema trips, there is nothing in between. This week there is also a crippling heat wave, so much so ive moved into the boardroom at work to do my work, so air con is our friend.
So when i saw cineworld were showing The Birdcage, which ive never seen before & only know little about i was like im down for that let me at this movie. Any chance to see Robin Williams again.

Screen 2 id say had about 30 people in it. Its a large screening so it looked a little sparse in places, but i could still tell from peoples ages that i was the youngest person in there for this films 30th anniversary. Id say the next youngest were 50.

Trailers, Some little film called the odyssey… anyone?! ekkk. The last viking (which i saw the week before) the invite which was the night before advanced preview but it was an england game so i didnt go, Pressure the new andrew scott movie & there was one more maybe it was one night only, yea i think it was cos i think i heard someone say isnt that Dua Lipas other half.

& then the film started… petition for this to be available to everyone in the world to watch at any time.

The opening of this film was blurry, i did let it off fo r that because doign that long of a shot like that into a certain place in the mid 90s was hard. They all blur a little. It also does give it the 90s vibe. But do you want to know the other vibe this film gave off. Vice City from GTA. Seriously. I felt like i was back in that computer game, no wonder people got that game. Okay i get then games & people adoring this film might not cross groups but now in 2026 they do.

I can kind of spoil this a little, its been out 30 years, but there is a point when he introduces his mum & literally the entire cinema just went awwwwwwwwwwwwww. It was the perfect thing to say & it was the truth & it proved everything about love that had been said through the rest of the film & how we should be our selves & not put on an act for the world to see. Just because box isnt for all, then why is it frowned upon to be any thing else. This film was proud to be queer & took the micky out of itself & was loud & bright & everything right with how people should be seen be in gender or sexuality. & this was made in the bloody 90s!

That Drag show & the whole bar vibe, fucking incredible. It was a live, there was no judgment. It just worked & it felt fresh today. The Cabarete vibe, the fact that anyone could be in there. The routines. Oh it just bloody worked & when its run & owned & stars those two even if it wasnt a film, well your in a safest most over dramatic place in the entire world & you are seen.

At the end of Act 2 before all the drama kicks off there is a beautiful sweet moment on the bench between the two of them. That got me a little. It had all been funny & sweet & camp until that point, but then that happened & it was bloody beautiful & i think that if you see this film for any reason you see it for that scene. Lane & Williams really were the perfect couple in this movie.

I want to know how much of this was scripted & how much of it was improvised especially anything in drag & anything just between those two because some of it felt like it would actually happen. The chemistry was brilliant. It had me laughing so so much. I forgot comedys could be this fun. Yes there was drama to it as well, but this was almost Rom Com Territory.

I wasnt expecting his mum to be well her & i love how the power dynamic shifted from what was expected at the time to this.

That ending was crazy & phenomenal at the same time. It just gave reason to everything & i loved it. There were so many things in this film that they tried to pull of which worked which you do sit there & think how did they do that then in the 90s & make it believable where as it would be hard to do today.

Political scandals still in fashion i see.

I loved this film. Im so glad ive seen it & i hope everyone who saw it back in the day or if your like me discovering it 30 years later, get the same joy from it & realise that lvoe it love.
