Last night was this years oscars, i have had a chill day of catching up & sleep & just well being a little bit of me, & now i am off to the cinema to watch a secret screening which i honestly after looking at odeons clues have no idea about at all.
Its pretty packed in screen 2, id say 80% full ready to go for this which is always good. Proper mix of ages too.
Trailers, Project hail mary (bring on friday) The drama ( 2 people left when they saw that was the trailer), Splitsville ( i thought it might have been that) the mummy (nope) & there was another horror film but i cant remember what its called it was the a24 one.
& then up came the bbfc card… Secret cinema was a film called Good Boy or depending on where you live in the world Heel. No this is not the film with the dog & it was odd but well acted.
So when i left the cinema after watching this i had loads of questions that i wanted to google but because it had only had a limited release, i couldnt. I since then have looked at things a few times & i still have some unanswered questions about it. Especially why the mum is so reclusive, who the room belonged to first, why they are actually doing this, did they do it to anyone else before this… & many more.
This is morally grey & wrong in so many ways. Why would you kidnap someone & treat them with kindness but also torture them? Why punish people one way but not another? Yes the bullying & social media abuse is bad & hes a prick when hes out partying but we were all pricks at 19 out clubbing getting drunk. Also they could have picked up any random drunk person as well. It just all feels a little odd. Like am i meant to be wanting the twat to get free or the kidnappers to teach him a lesson so he can sort his life out. Its very conflicting.
Its very full on at times, we had a few people walk out after something happened which was very unpleasant & grim to watch. I get it if your not comfortable with some of the stuff in this thats fine. It did have 2 warnings after the bbfc card about some stuff that would go on, so i get it. So to the 30 odd people who left during the film that makes sense. You can either cope with this or not. But then again maybe a secret film isnt for you then. Especially the chaining up & emotional abuse as well. I can imagine that a lot of people found that unsettling.
That being said there are moments of warmth & humanity in this film which do restore your faith. It shows that both good people can have bad sides & that those that are mean can be reformed as well giving some hope to us all.
There were some really good depictions of nights out & abuse of substances drink & lust in the film. That felt very real.
How did no one notice suddenly all this chain & rails being purchased? Im sure the government would have picked up on the weird orders. Also where do you get chlorophyl from? Everyone in this film seems to have easy access to it. Ive never seen a bottle in my life.
Its also quite poetic how after a while everyone just accepts their fate & routines in the world. It is a little weird but if something happens enough no matter how disturbing it is it becomes your new normal.
This is not for the faint hearted, but if youve got the guts to sit with it, you will find it very profound, well acted & find a much deeper meaning to it. I just wish it had answered a few more of my questions, then we would be talking about this as a future cult classic.
