Ive been sick all week, but was being unwell going to stop me from seeing Project Hail Mary? fuck no. If its as epic as the hype has it this is a must see.
However i do need to moan at cineworld. For almost 2 weeks now you cant book for an uplift cinema on you app or online for imax if its not where your group is. Both my imaxs are an hours drive so i either need to make time in my day to drive an hour there & back to get tickets or i need to turn up & hope (hope) that you still have seats left for me. Im paying for you to have my money… SORT IT THE FUCK OUT!
Usually cineworld are good at this but at the moment its piss poor. (FYI Cineworld have now sorted this out as of the 7 weeks later).
Could have been a nightmare to get to my screening as there were 2 major traffic incidents on friday, but both had cleared up as i headed to the marina for 5pm. Screen 4 for this id say was 60% full which is pretty good.
Trailers i put my phone away to watch as id heard rumours & wanted to see them all. Disclosure Day, Spiderman 4, Dune Part 3, The Mandalorian & Grogu! Like how epic is that. All of those. Phenomenal. The woman in the row behind me when Din was unmasked. I dont blame her but yea for once the trailers were worth it. We did also have the super Mario Galaxy too.
& then the film started… Dont believe the hype… its not hyped enough…
I will do anything for Rocky & Grace (rocky is revealed in the trailer so thats not a spoiler i know some people are like hang on about it who have read the book). They have better chemistry that Dakota Johnson & well anyone & Margot & Jacob recently. It just worked. Not bad for a little puppet in a ball.
I was worried that the trailer had actually ruined the film, but it hadnt yes we know hes been sent into space to save the world but he meet a rock alien, but its so much more than that. & how act 3 was framed at points was spot on to the point. It just worked so so well & left the reveal in a clever way for you to appreciate what he had gone through to get to this point.
This film has some of the best use of flashbacks in a long long time. Its the subplot to the rest of the film, but its used when its helping him out in space to explain a few things & im so glad they did this. I am guessing this is how it happens in the book as well.
Is it going to surprise you that i cried hard a couple of times? I doubt it, because it was magical. & it wasnt just the story that made me cry, it was the score & the visuals & what it all meant. It was the full emotional experience. A film that can have you laughing & then crying minutes later is one of wonder & brilliance & they need to be appreciated. The film did give you time to appreciate everything it was telling you as well. There was a purpose to the pauses it left but it also was needed. It never felt slow.
Who doesnt love a reference to the Beatles?
Who doesnt love a reference to a brilliant sports film?
& how much did they pay Harry Styles for that song, because damn it was spot on. I was worried it wouldnt have the right effect in the film but it was perfect.
The mental health room is brilliant, especially when Rocky mentions something about it.
The stakes of the film were very high but it was dramatic when it needed to be. The mission was possible & you always knew there would be some issues with it being in space but it just felt like it was the right amount of peril without over doing it. I mean the fact that his first space walk hes like nope no thanks, classic.
The score as ive said before add so much to it, but there is one moment where Ryan is saying im having a moment, & it gives you goosebumps (not fist my bumps).
This film is deep, it makes you sit there & ask yourself would you be willing to do all of this to save humanity & what you would be willing to sacrifice for your friends. It really is important. It might happen in space but the circumstances can be used in real life.
Did Ryan have to wear those slutty little glasses & cardigans, because damn it was rather wonderful to look at. I hope he & the guy who was Rocky (who was also his puppet as well as voice) get some awards season love next year, if people can remember sinners this year they can remember these two come march.
Words of Encouragement… you cant just say that…okay then… great words of encouragement…
Rocky would give this 5 thumbs down… & i am having to pull my hand away from hitting a golden buzzer, its extremely tempting. Ive not felt this way about a film in a very very long time. It put me through the feels in the right way & i fear that with this & the moon stuff going on at the moment, this might be my personality for along time of 2026.
No pressure Nolan, but you got to pull of your own hail mary to beat this as film of the year…
