How many more heatwaves do we want, its the first full week in July & the we are now into one which cold last 10 days, so time to head to the cinema which is airconditioned, in an airconditioned car to chill out… i mean see a film. & tonight the viewing is the Invite which since its been out in America for the last 3 weeks ive heard loads of people say it is their film of the year, lets see how good it is shall we.
Screen 4 had a decent number of people in for an 8pm thursday night id say maybe about 50 which is alright. A proper mix of ages. There was a group of late teens, there were people in their 20s & right at the front was an older couple who were definitely in their late 70s. Word of mouth is good.
Trailers, Spa day (probably) The weird sex film about the holiday camp (it is done by tv glow person), Pressure (got to love some andrew scott) & this weird little film im not sure many people are talking about called the Odyssey… no idea never heard of it (8 days to go).
& then the film started… i can see why some people bloody adore this.
I have 1 major question & if youve seen this its not what you think im about to say… HOW MUCH CHEESE!? Seriously babes, its a cost of living crisis, no one has any money, you literally say you inherited the house & spent all your money doing it up. & yet you can not only go you buy all of that cheese that you must have take a loan out for to purchase, but then hardly anyone eats it & then when all the drama is over you stand there & go, oh ill clean up tomorrow. You literally have like $200 of cheese & ham sitting unwrapped on your dinning room table. WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?! Can you tell i am someone who has to budget. It started being in touch being like oh im showing off for a dinner party, but then when you realise everything else going on you realise its not relatable at all.
Pegging (yep thats what you were expecting)! i never thought id ever hear Edward Norton talk about being pegged but i did & now its an image i will never get out of my head. I also like how the film was so sex & passionate positive, often films just go oh nope or dont actually have a conversation about it. When they all start getting frank about it all they ask the questions you often shy away form but here they are all very open about it. Always nice to see. Also it made us laugh a lot with some of the descriptions. You also see a lack of sex in the film but your mind does linger on some things teased or said.
Eds monologue, phenomenal. I think thats my favourite performance from him if not in years maybe ever. It was enchanting & heart-breaking & means you never know whats gone on in someone elses life & mind just because you assume one thing doesnt mean its not something deeply personal that has made them became like this. Since leaving the cinema i have since found out this was improvised &the reactions were real in the room. Makes it even better.
It is more or less a play keeping them all in that room with minimal other people in at at the start. But they all have good chemistry be in bickering or passionate moment or moments of comedy or the most awkward house tour ever. It all just feels organic & like you have just dropped in on them all for a night. They work really well as a group, but also everyone is given a chance to shine & show why they are such good actors, even Seth. Seth is a version of himself i think but he still brings a layer to it where he basically says what everyone else is thinking but doesnt hold back. Sometimes honesty is the best thing.
This film had a brilliant explanation of the menopause which i heard a couple of guy in my cinema mutter going hmm fair enough, just like they did in the film.
That apartment was huge but they were honest about their finances & everything it in. Often everyone has this over the top house for their minimal salary & no one cares, but here its explained.
Maybe we all need some sort of therapy. Maybe not sex therapy but still. It could be useful.
Oliva in my opinion writes strong characters & always gives you something to talk about. As far as im concerned she is now 3 for 3 out of the films i have seen her direct. Each one with a different message but all with powerful female leads that make a point.
I laughed, i understood, it was compelling & engaging & edgy without being too much. Its like when you read a smut & someone leaves you to think of the rest of it before it gets going. It teased but was bold enough to treat you like a sensible adult.
Basically go see this & feel positive about your life, your preferences & dont be afraid to ask questions & get uncomfortable. By doing that you may find answers to your own questions.
