We all grow up knowing the story of Romeo & Juliet. If you dont i feel for you, because its one of the most reimagined & retold stories ever & other then the barred himself the greatest version of this is the Baz Lurman classic from 1996, which 15 year old me watched in 2005 & wrote essays on in 2006 proving a point no one else in my class made. So for its 30th anniversary its time to head to the cinema to see it on the big screen on a friday night.
Im impressed its half sold out. There are also groups of teens who clearly are having to do this at GCSE this year which makes my heart a little bit more full that people are still watching this for there literature.
Trailers Splitsville (booked) Michael (yep) The Drama (yep) & there was one more i think it might have been the hunger games. But all were trailers i was expecting. Ooh there was devil wears prada as well (got to love the tucci i need to watch the first).
& then the film started… still iconic & wonderfully camp (my dvd review is here for more detail)
How did Harold didnt even get an oscar nomination for his role in this baffles be beyond belief, like what the hell is going on. Its still the best part of the film his monologue before they head off to the party. John as Tybalt is iconic too, those heals, wonderful. I mean no offence to anyone else but damn they are the stars.
The sound at the start with the news real & the flash forwards explaining the film & how it is actually the real story, oh that was worth the cinema trip just for that, goosebumps & every nerve on edge watching that & whenever a choir sang as well, it was heavenly.
Paul Rudd really doesnt age does he? But baby Leo… aww bless him & his curtains.
That fish tank, i dont think there are many moments in film that are as romantic as that, sparks fly &its beautifully shout & with desree in the background its wonderful. The whole room after that dance where she keeps looking at him or for him just did a collective awwwwwwww
Did hot fuzz do love fool better? well… joking obviously…maybe.
Yes i now feel really old that im seeing this all these years later & that there were teens there who werent even born when i first saw this that are now taking it as an exam, but Baz cooked makign this & im not sure it will ever be beaten for an adaptation.
Now Queens go slay… we got a party to get to… after all young hearts run free.
