Welcome to Cinema Club 2026 & we are starting it with one of my most anticipated for 2025, Marty Supreme. Now despite little Timmy shouting for over a year saying it was out here on boxing day, he lied. Well technically he was right. Multiplexes with more than 8 screens or everyman cinemas had it, everywhere else had to wait until new years day. I had already paid the uplift to see Sentimental Value so knowing my cineworld was having a showing in the new year, i waited. So here i am on my first cinema trip of 2026 on the 2nd.
My 12:50 showing was almost sold out. Id say there was maybe 10 seats empty. Also lots of people had taken today off work or arent back until monday, as there was no one under the age of 25 there. I mean im technically unemployed for a day so.
Trailers… Crime 101, rental family, no other choice & Hamnet. Lots of award season picks. However i am very upset they got rid of the paramount plus goat. I love that guy hes my guilty pleasure. also thats for getting rid of that horrible cineworld advert with the fake quiz.
& then the film started… i can confirm that marty was supreme.
Also this is my apology, you getting this review in March is so so bad, blame writers block, anxiety & a backlog from the end of last year & also watching too many film & starting a new job in 2026. It all adds up but i have a plan to get through as much of this back log as possible.
Any how where were we… oooh year Marty…
This film is so so much more than a table tennis movie. This is about the under dog, & ego & being the big guy & being used & over doing it & trying to make a point & it just works so organically that you adore it & you want Marty to do well. You really really do.
Timothee… i think the oscar is pending (even now at this late stage with less then a week to go as i write this) i still think its coming, i really do. The man really has range & its glorious, you sit there & believe him in every role & he… he just owns them all. I sat there talking to my sister about his filmography & she was like wonka was weird but she adored him in it… she said that. So you know that proves the kid really has got it & the oscar is incoming, im sure of it. He is going to be one of the greats.
It was nice to see the old wembley stadium, i was not expecting that in this at all.
The actual table tennis when we watched it was cleverly done. I know i just said a few minutes a go this is so much more than it, but when it takes centre stage you can see he practiced & that it was that good. Also the idea of him getting a custom ball… brilliant. Although apart from the people at his table tennis club no one really did care about him. I think that also hit home a lot as well. Wanting to belong to something more, to leave your mark on the world & be remembered. It was really clever.
The bath tub scene we all jumped at & then laughed & then went of god at. Very similar to the scene in the hotel at the end at the start of act 3 with a peach & a bat. Was very awkward but funny. But i am glad some of the uperty people in this did get put in their place, yes Marty wants to end up being uperty to, but he realises at the end his place in the world & as he crys your own heart gets heavy.
When you look at the run time you think its going to take forever but because there is so much going on &it have an amazing supporting cast & theres constant drama, you really cant take your eyes off it. Its another film of his where its ended & ive been like hang on were done what the hell, give me more.
Amazing score & soundtrack for the film, got to love some tears for fears, but the imaging with forever young was a bit out there.
I love how it didnt hold back on how hard life can be for just normal people to. I know this is set back in the 50s but it shows the real world struggles of people in every day life.
His mum wasnt very nice was she.
Its very rare the first film of the year is a golden buzzer contender but there was a reason this was on my watch list for 2025. ITs stunning & the kids has done good (not that Timothee is a kid anymore). What a way to start cinema club 2026. Bring on the movies.
