New job has somehow meant that i have a really early finish time on fridays, i am not complaining, so i am going to grab it with both hands & head off to see a film i thought i would miss Song Sung Blue, because lets be honest who doesnt want to see Hugh Jackman sing.
Road works meant i got to my cinema as the trailers were on, i know how many people were in there as i got my ticket as i arrived. 8… 8 other people were in there with me. & the trailers i saw were for crime 101, no other choice & H is for hawk… i think thats what its called. but i do like that it was very quick & got on to it.
Then the film started… That wasnt the film i was expecting if im honest.
If ive said it once ive said it a thousand times, there is something about when Hugh Jackman when he starts singing that is very magnetic & captivating. Its like catnip. Yes the hair & the outfit was a bit much but it was very much in the Neil Diamond role for it so it really worked. He can be forgiven.
This film starts off being a Neil Diamond tribute act movie & then at about the hour it changes into a very different & much more personal film than i was expecting & that shocked me. But it did it in a good way. I dont want to spoil it for you. I hadnt done my research on it so i was learning as i watched which was very nice to do. I love the whole family struggle they all went through & how you watched them grow & learn together & how their lives changed along the way. It shows that yes things in anyone’s worlds can be changed instantly & can all fall apart or suddenly turn around. It was very clever showing howe it effects everyone.
It was a little bit long, it could have maybe ended about 10 mins earlier. I dont know why we had to keep adding onto it, it had made its point earlier on for sure. Maybe thats just he film nerd in me going look that shoot or that feeling was the perfect way to end this & they just kept going. Sometimes Hollywood you need to know when to stop.
The urge to sing sweet caroline was really hard & i love the fact they spent most of the first 30mins trying not to do it & then just being like it brings people in stuff it. But i then love that when they get to bigger places they sing the songs they want to do first to then end on the crowd pleasers, remembering who they were.
The guy who was Buddy Holly was really good & funny especially when he said hes been a tribute act of him longer than body had been alive it total now. I also loves the thai food place guys. See its the normal people you meet along the way that make the journey special. Its not the fame & the lights, its those small moments. & always do what makes you happy as well, dont let anyone tell you its stupid. If its makign you smile & its not harming anyone do it.
I know when you recover from things there is no set speed, but she recovered a little bit to quickly for a film if im honest. It was like the whole film was done in like 26 months or something & the first 12 months was the first hour & 10 mins. I know you find strength in different ways but still. It was a little bit crazy.
When you get sober in america you have a sponsor who pays you? really? is this just an in movie thing or does this happen? please can someone let me know.
I am actually impressed with how many Neil Diamond songs i knew from this. I didnt realise one of them was his so i did a good job there.
I think if you know the back story & really like Neil Diamond, you will get a lot more out of this than i did, but i was pleasantly surprised by this movie. Yes i could see where the ending was coming from a while off but i still had a lush time at the cinema. This is a quiet little gem.
