Friday is early cinema time, once i get petrol & get through central brighton in a heat wave in the middle of august, i know i know, but still what can take 22mins took nearly an hour yesterday. Oh well. At least i can get to an airconditioned cinema right… wrong brighton cineworld only have 3 screens at the moment with air con fully working, its madness. Its slowly breaking they need to shit for 2 days to get it working again. Any how lets go see Sunny Dancer.
Right its that time, weve not played this in a while… how many people were in my 4:50 screening… if you answered 12 congratulation. Also for a while it was just me & one older man who had picked the back row in the corner which was a little bit creepy.
We had a fuck ton of trailers, one night only, dog stars, spa day, mutiny, pressure & bad apples. I had not seen the bad apples trailer, but i am so so in.
Before the film started, we had a message from the director to say thanks for coming to watch & that every £1 of profit the film makes 50p will go to the teenage cancer trust. So that was nice.
& then (we will get to the film in a minute) i went to see this on the 14th August, the films credits started at about 7pm. I live in the UK. At 7:02 i felt my phone move in my bag & then the girls in my row their phone started makign noise & then so did everyone elses. & i knew that tone. & i automatically was like well if the world is ending at least i can stay here eat popcorn & watch the odyssey on loop as it all goes wrong… Oh no… Our wonderful ne PM sent out an emergency alert about the heat wave & not one off fires… For Fuck Sake. I had to go to the toilet & calm down for a few mins as my anxiety was through the roof. Yes not great.
Anyhow… so the film started… it was nice & sweet & funny & so british with out attitude to everything.
James Bloody Blunt is in this film for like a 10 second cameo which i was not expecting. Obviously he played your beautiful however he didnt do the line about being fucking high. Damn you James. However earlier on in the film they shame an influencer for coming to talk & be inspirational to them out of self pity to make them look good which is a good point, however no one says that to james blunt. Hes doing the same thing by performing a talent show & judging which ends up despite being said at the start was important, we dont even know who wins it. I know other shiz goes down but still.
It was a good coming of age story even without the cancer stuff in it. Bella really does carry everything on their back & owns it as always. They are so underrated. Neil Patrick Harris as well does a bloody good job for the like 5 scenes hes in & the rest of the cast are all okay. However you could tell based on the way certain things were going down & the fact that this was a film about cancer kids in remission that there was always going to be a twist.
I didnt actually cry at this, i really thought i would do, but no. I felt sad at the end but no tears fell.
This film is best when it has honest conversations about their illness & their lives & their experiences & trying to be normal kids & how when they are at this camp they are just them, not the kid with cancer as they have all been there. Also the guilt & the therapy too, that felt very important. Maybe this should be shown at secondary schools when the kids get to year 10. It wouldnt just work for cancer it would be good for anyone going through anything, make people try to understand how others feel.
We are back into the genre of every teenage in a film having a lake or body of water to go escape to then. This one it happens a lot. I mean i get it. I walk to a beach to clear the cobwebs, so a body of water for some trauma makes sense.
Extra royalties for the scissor sisters from this, absolute banger of a song & that dance was chaotic.
I like how it kept it in sections so you could see how everyone grew & changed due to what had happened to them. That was very clever.
Also being a teenager not liking your parents cooking is relatable to most (i mean not me back in the day my parents were chefs).
It was sweet & soft but was willing to have proper adult conversations about real life issues that happen to everyone. It was a very calm but emotional way to finish my week. IF you get the chance to see it please do, the charity would really appreciate it.
