I’ve been hunting this down on streaming for ages, i really have, no one ever has it. But at the moment cineworld are doing a music season of movies, & this is night 2 so i am not missing this. Its my chance at last to see it. So come with me to see Purple Rain from 1984 on a friday night in 2026.
I am the youngest person in my screening. The next youngest is mid 50s i mean i get it but i was expecting a few more millennials to be there. I was expecting a few more people head tapping or shoulder moving but i didnt see much.
Trailers, Michael (booked up), Devil wears prada (im going to watch the first this week), billie eilish, bts & another concert thing i was like oh okay at. So yea it stayed on trend.
& then the film started… oooh there may have been a lack of plot but damn.
This was a lot of peoples bisexual awakening in the 1980s wasnt it? I mean i dont blame them because i was sitting there today in 2026 going damn theres a lot of hot sexy people in this film that are extremely hot & fuckable. I mean prince always had an aura about him but damn almost everyone in this film had a style to them that just oozed. Yea if you were feral in the 80s you stood no chance.
There was a lack of plot im afraid to say, however part of me was kind of expecting this to be the case. She wants a job, hes a rocker who wont listen to others, they fall for each other, his mums domestically abused, she realises fame isnt everything & he listens to others & then gets the praise he deserves. All of that happens with lots of moody montages, long stares, & songs all in 110 mins. IT does get a bit dark & grim at times & is uncomfortable to watch.
However we are all their for the music lets not beat around the bush here & thats going to be the closest i ever get to hearing purple rain live isnt it. I unfortunatly was getting into prince in my late teens early 20s & then he died so i missed out on the hay day. IT was rather wonderful hearing that be played. Every song was lush, god he was so fucking talented. We took him for granted we really really did.
It showed really well how the entertainment industry then ate people our &had them as disposable for 15 minutes of frame &then done & gone. Its still like that today, but im guessing in the 80s it wasnt as well known this happened.
Those heels he wore… damn… i want a pair please, they were stunning, but so were all his clothes & so was that man. Always iconic & the top of style whatever decade he was in.
This was so stereotypically 80s it was cringe, & yet it kind of worked.
This might not have been phenomenal or sticking or outstanding but its a brilliant time casual to show off how good prince really was & how his music will last for years upon years & how a film from the 1980s is still cherished to this day. Im so glad i have finally seen it.
