Spoilers

It’s finally time. You all wish you had this on physical media because you can’t watch it anywhere but me in my early 20s brought a mini Danny Boyle boxset, so while none of you can stream this, I can watch this for the first time… god help me. I mean i could have actually gone to the cinema to see it this week, they are doing Danny Boyle Season (yes thats how far behind my typing is on DVD films, my bad).

Bless them & their very small budget, although lets be honest with such a small budget for an indi film, they did a fucking good job. I love how Danny Boyle has since this was made confessed that he almost got arrested for some of the london filming because he sent Cillian out at 4am over the solstice when no one was walking around central london for the iconic shoots. Spectacular that. I guess when they make the next one they will easily be given a permit to do it. It did lead to such an iconic look of him with his bag on westminster bridge in hospital gear just looking at nothing. Early but so so so good. Still has the desired effect all these years later.

But there were some bit where the filming wasnt the best. I get its meant to induce the terror in you, but even in the 90s it was little bit to awkward at points. I was just like hang on, i dont think that bit is meant to be so shaky & out of focus. It just looked like they had the money just for that 1 take & then went well wed best include that in the film as otherwise thats going to be odd that we jump to that.

I know the end of the world tv shows & films are very much in at the moment, but for such a small little independent film, it did a good job. But you can see where the core of what makes them now comes from.

Cillian as always is so so good & i completely forgot it was Naomi Harris in it with him too. She was good too. I love who their roles reversed as well that she starts off as the hard one willing to leave people for dead only for her at the end to be vulnerable. The complete opposite of him. It was very good.

Brendan Gleeson, i was not expecting, but he gets killed off so quickly. He is a joy to watch. How he would do anything for his little girl to keep her safe. I do love that hes so pissed off it hasnt rained in 10 days in London. I laughed a lot at that. What a call out. Thats so the case too.

The deaths are not nice at all be them on screen or off, to put people out of their misery or just torture or murder. But Danny Boyle has never hidden away from that & i really liked that. Again a horror genre showing that we are the monsters & maybe not the evil zombie things we become.

I get the animal people wanting to free the monkys at the start i really do however surely they would have even back in the early late 00s have worked out what they were being tested on. Also did they ever actually really have a plan after they freed them. Were they just going to let monkeys out in cambridge & hope they either punted up the river or just went to live in a university garden. They were stupid.

I love how his parents suicide note was to hope he never found it & stayed asleep. That was very profound move by them. It was beautiful & sad, but would make you question what you would do in that situation.

The petrol station exploding was clearly half the films budget, hence why they got the explosion from so many angles. I wanted a bit more of a kaboom that we got but still, it was good, but why didnt it summon more infected.

The second they started driving through that tunnel i was with Cillian. Nope this is a horror film you dont drive through it. Bollocks to that. & Im also glad it showed how bad sleep was & dreams would be at the end of the world too.

Act 3… Im not a fan of. It was going so well. It took far too long for the true intentions of it to be revealed, that it was just a group of army guys who wanted sex. Like nah mate & then for them to be so easily taken out in that huge mansion that they had been in for the last month, which they must have known much better than the rest of the group. Also those traps didnt work very well did they.

I mean the whole sex slaves & grooming wasnt good, but it was literally just the two girls we had met. There wasnt anyone else they had picked up along the way.

& then the showdown, i wanted it to be more violent or scary & it lacked in both. Almost like it knew it had to show off the rooms in this manor but not destroy them because the real owner would be back in a week. & Eccleston i didnt care or hate enough to give a shit about his turn & him being evil. So her he got taken to be eaten i was like oh okay.

Im glad it actually gave us some small amount of hope at the end, with them living in isolation as the infected died out. That was nice, often we dont get that Danny, so cheers.

This was going so well to be a potentially fantastic film, but act 3 just makes this a decent film & not one to rant & rave about. Im glad ive seen it & will recommend it to people, i will just tell them that it falters a little at point.

So id best watch 28 weeks later then on disney plus soon before the next one comes out next year. (yes i know… i know…)
