Time to hide behind the scarf (but its not cold enough yet) for Black Phone 2. The first film was one my surprise films when it came out so im very interested tot see how they do the second one & how its all going to work out. Lets see if it still sends chills down my spine.
Turns out i am not the only person thinking i should watch this on a sunday at midday. ITs half full. Im glad. A lot of early 20s in there & a couple of millennials too. But im impressed by this. I also on auto pilot booked my fave seat in screen 1, which means if i jump or hide everyone will see.
Trailers, Predators (erm nope) Keeper (maybe) Bugonia (yes) & there was something else as well but i cant remember what it was. IT was still horror based.
& then the film started… it was not as good as the first but it wasnt too much of a step down.
I am very glad i saw this on a sunday lunch time when i had time to recover because some of that if i had seen it at like 6pm would have had me going oh god how am i going to sleep. It got dark & freaky & rather unsettling at points but it a good way.
I like the shift in it. I mean when you male lead is suddenly in a major franchise & wanted in other films, you have to shift it a little, so shifting it to the sister was subtle but was a very clever way to do it. Also using her “power” from the first film was a natural way to do it. Because lets be honest the guy died in the first film he had to come back some how so doing it this way was good.
It helps when your horror villain is scary & Ethan Hawke is tremendous in these film, he really does do a good job to be so menacing. Also that voice is scary when hes threatening, & dont get me started on the ice skating. Ahhhh. There were a couple of moments that actually had me jumping & i can usually make sure i dont when it comes to horror, but no i got caught out here which is saying something.
It took the adults far too long to put things together, like that godly couple they could jog on seriously, it was all a little bit too much or then too little at time. Them not being competent made act 2 drag a little bit you sat there waiting for them to go to sleep.
The introduced a new boyfriend who was a little bit lacking compared to the other 2 but he got durran durran tickets for like $20… thats not bad at all mate. But i guess we needed another dynamic, also they are teens so a love interest would be something someone was exploring.
The scenes in the phone booth were chilling, always made my hairs stand on end, the film was at its best in thsoe moments when you were waiting to see what would happen next or what was going to be said.
The film did lack some of the stakes of the original film & has now been set up for potential sequels.
Snow is now everyones enemy isnt it.
This wasnt the original but ive seen much worse horror films this year, but also better. Im looking forward to watching it with the lights on where i can hide on my sofa
