Cinema & Film viewing is going to drop, the world cup is now here, however it is still my plan to go to the movies whenever i can find a gap. So tonight a chance to watch an advanced preview which includes my mate mads, im not going to say no. Also next weeks advanced preview is unfortunatly clashing with england which is a shame. How dare they. Also i know nothing about this film at all so im going in completely blind other than the letterboxd synopsis.
Screen 4 has a competition before i got in to win freebies, i didnt which was a shame. But it was half full which was always good. Also mainly millennials & gen z, a few boomers but not many.
Trailers, The Odyssey (tickets are booked & ready to go & im doing a count down) Jackass maybe, the invite (next weeks premier) spiderman (will be booking tickets this week) & there was one more trailer, i cant remember what it was for though, oooh the one with the chef with the guy from the holdovers in it thats the one. That looks good, im guessing which ever american chef hes a young version of was super famous? can someone help me please & let me know.
& then the film started… whatever you think this film is going to be, its going to be that & then also so not be that…
I would have not seen this film if it didnt have Mads in it, even as an advanced preview. i know thats bad of me to say, but i knew nothing about this at all & was like okay whats going to happen. & lets just day i am very very glad i did. Because the journey it takes you on is incredible & clever & funny & heart warming & breaking & just delivers on so many levels.
So since leaving the cinema ive seen the trailer so i can talk to you about something. The whole thinking your John Lennon & getting people who also thing they are Ringo & George Paul (that will make sense) to play as the Beatles at a talent show is an incredible idea. What a brilliant way of embracing peoples mental health & trying to help them through it by just going with it. So the Beatles & the ABBA References are amazing (yes i said ABBA as well but im not going to say why). Also its a complete moment which puts you into something else & just had us all laughing a lot with the sudden change up.
The film also has one of the most extreme tressure hunts which is a real tressure hunt in it, which is actually more than just looking for money, its about unlocking the past & accepting all sorts of things.
IKEA! Thats it… thats the sentence.
This film brings up a really important question & discussion about mental health & how its not one size fits all. You can have many different mental health issues. We need to listen to them all & discus if we feel up toit or not what can be done to help. I know this film pushes it to the extreme, but i genuinely believe that even if this was in English & not Danish that Mads got the story across & the struggle he was facing in the movie. He wont get any big award nominations for this, but its a stunning performance & yes he is the name in a film full of people as an english person i dont know, but it works because it needed someone that good to pull it off. It also brings up a question about “dead names” too & how it can trigger things, again not to this extreme, but then again in act 3 was useful. This film is morally wrong & right at the same time.
There are some really small little details in this film that you need to pay attentions too. When something is revealed at the start of act 3 i was like oh for fuck sake how did i not work that out. I had worked out the second twist but the first one i sat there angry at myself but happy with the film. I like it when a film outsmarts me. It means its gone its job very well.
This film starts & ends with a macabre animation about being equal. Its clever & makes complete sense by the time you get to its reprise at the end of the film. But it is beautifully animated & told. It was wonderful. More of this movies please.
There are some grim parts to this film, it gets dark & has hard conversations within it which arent just about mental health. The “bad guy” really did wait forever, but hes just a distraction in theory to make you realise that hes just stopping the actual conversation from happening.
Once again i think i got more emotionally involved as i had to read. However i am now thinking ive seen a few Danish films that maybe i should start learning it, is it hard peoples?
The flashbacks werent constant but felt like they were right for when we needed to know things & for reveals. When the main reveal at the end was shown the guy next to me didnt see it coming & as the flash back started went oh thats good. It was used cleverly.
Its a very simple story & i think thats why the main characters in it do just get on as theres not much to muck about with which works well.
I am honestly amazed ive somehow been able to write this review, without completely spoiling it. Its been hard to write, but its one of those films that when you watch it, it makes complete sense & then you think about it on your drive home or the next couple of days & go how am i going to talk to people about this film.
This is my surprise film of the year, i think i can lock that in. It was triumphant & all about seeing the good in people & trying to learn & understand & ultimately help each other even if sometimes thats the bad thing to do. Go see it peoples, even if its just for Mads being phenomenal (but thats a given).
