Sam Neill died in the last month. It hurt… a lot. But for this film, forget your dinosaurs, im a Wilderpeople girl & i remember him talking & promoting this film 10 years ago & praising Taika a lot, it was my first real exposure to Taika knowing about him. So they were all going to go on tour to celebrate its 10th birthday & there has been an empty seat at the Q&As for Sam. So what is a better way than to celebrate this by paying & going to see it this time around. Lets go see if Ricky Baker is still gangster shall we.
I paid for this £9 i know & it was in the middle of a saturday in brighton at the start of the next heat wave, its madness isnt it. But if i want to see it thats what i got to deal with. My screening at the komedia was half sold out & was a real mix of ages too.
Trailers, Klara & the sun (the next taika movie) Tony, the martin Scorsese season, & finally i saw the trailer for COYOTE VS ACME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously i am so buzzed for this in a few weeks time. Im more hyped for this than i am Avengers Doomsday. Which is saying a lot.
& then the film started… Majestical. No other word needed.

The film did end with the highlights from the Q&A for 5mins with some of the best bits & then showed sams empty chair at the end of it. So so beautiful. We miss you Sam a lot. It should have been my first time watching jurassic park his passing but i think we will save that for christmas (when we get to this film i will do a sofa viewer review for like the first time in donkeys & i will explain the lore).
Now i remember watching Taika promote this film first time around & he sat there & went EXCITINGMENT! which is now part of my daily vocabulary, but if im honest i forgot this is where i got majestical from. Its such a lush word too & the fact Sam says it, makes it even more amazing.
The Ricky Baker Birthday song gets even more entertaining every time you watch it. You know its coming but you then just still get taken out my that cheap keyboard & the love of everyone in that scene. Its just brilliant.
Taika has his iconic 1 shot sweep in a circle a couple of times. Its his signature for sure. & when you know how he does it you can spot the stand in people for sure. Still doesnt make it any less cool.
I honestly forgot it was done in chapters as well which was a nice surprise. Also the chapters are either like 2 mins or 25 mins. It also lets you know weve changed gear again now & blurs it all into 1 long act (except for the epilogue). It never really feels like we leave act 1 or start act 3 it just flows. I mean obviously that happened but you know what i mean.
I cried at this Haiku at the end. It meant so much. Also what a brilliant way to make people remember haikus. Also thats another of Taikas talents. Having you laughing one second & then crying the next second. Its unmatched.
If you cant get comfort from a hot water bottle, i feel sorry for you.
I have seen some recent big budget films with cgi animals including pigs & bores, & yet this budget indi film made them more realistic when they charge. How? Hollywood do better. If Taika cant do it for a few thousand dollars you can make some of the creatures more realistic.
New Zealand looks fucking beautiful in this.
This is the prime example of the modern cinema cult classic. Those who have watch it adore it & want you all to enjoy it. Im sure more people have discovered it as Taika has got more famous but its wonderful. So happy 13th birthday for the 10th time Ricky you gangster, i hope you made your money finding that bird.
