Confession, i was never really into these as a teen when they started & then when i got older i watched them with friends at house parties drunk. I have also only really rewatched the first one a couple of years ago so maybe i am not the best person to review this… however i know the Scary Movie films spoof all the recent films especially in the horror genre… most of which i have seen, therefore maybe i am qualified to see it. Lets see shall we.
i was in screen 6 for the 6:20 showing so went straight from work. It was about half full which is always good. There was no one younger than a millennial there which lets be honest is to be expected.
Trailers, Jackass the finale, the new Bella Ramsey movie which looks like its going to make me cry, Disclosure day, a girls trip movie (im not sure what it was called) & then the horror film where they push the guy into the knives in the dishwasher. I have no idea what its called & i have no intention on seeing it, so i will keep calling it that.
& then the film started… maybe this should have been left as a teen franchise & not revived.
Lets talk positives shall we.
These films take the piss out of all of the most recent horror & cultural movies, thats the point of them as well as taking the micky out of itself. So one of the the films they copy is Weapons when all those kids are winning. A little girl at one point while running goes 6 7 & then gets hit by a car & gets yeeted across the sky, its very funny. The other point i relay laughed at was the theme park where everyone dies & everything crashes it reminded me rollercoaster tycoon from back in the day. But that was more my memory of the game & how i tried to break it. Its a bit of a throw away moment in the film but i enjoyed it. I think that was all the times that i laughed.
I do like the fact they had so many films from the lest few years to spoof (plus get out) but at one point i was sat there going hang on how is this linked to the plot & are we just writing them in as an idea, i honestly got bored of it at one point it just went a but meh. Like the woman with the substance, okay yes that has a pay off but no one cared about her until that person crawled out of the back of her.
The plot is also very flimsy, i know these films are not meant to go oh were going to test the brain & make you think about it all, but it treated us all like we were still teenagers when well we arent any more & i dont think they realised their target audience isnt gen alpha or z.
Why is ghostface some times accepted & welcomed by people hes going to try & kill & then 5 minutes later its like hang on hes going to kill me get away? Its to weird. Also theres no consistency between who has these opinions of them.
The nostalgia moments felt far too forced, it was almost waiting for like someone to cheer but it was just like yep thats character is here we dont need to pause move on please, but no they wanted more of an iconic moment & the film didnt deliver that dopamine hit.
The Whatsup was wasted.
The youtube bit was clever, i want to do a deep dive on the comments sections as im sure it was unhinged but no it was like hang on its done. Literally it was like 3 mins of the movie. It was a flash & gone. I was expecting them to use this or a tiktok format more regularly than just this one point as a way of being like oh my god ghost face you never, but no.
My cinema wasnt really laughing either, a few other chuckles but considering we were the people who grew up with these movies, it was just met with a few hmmm & giggles. It wasnt the laugh fest it was expecting from it.
There are some films that know they are bad & that makes them good, but this one was so bad & so meta that it felt soulless & a huge cash grab with minimal thought put into it.
There might be some people out there that bloody adored this & thought it was insanely hilarious but i can tell you right now its not me or the people i was sat with.
