For over 20 years i have sat here going Cillian Murphy is my guy (for lots of reasons) & you all slept on him until the 3rd season of Peaky Blinders. Suddenly hes everyones favourite… where were you all when i was fan girling over red eye back in the day. So today he gets his franchise flowers. Today is time for Tommy Shelby to hit the big screen & bring the peaky blinders to the big screen.
This is also film 2 of 3 for my crazy 48hs of cinema.
I went to the Dome to see this today, in what used to be their screen 2, but they have changed their screens around . Screen 1 is sill the main one, but old screen 3 is now screen 2 & they now have a new screen 3 & what was screen 2 with the old school odeon premier chairs is now screen 4 & they are all really comfortable posh sofa with tables & lots of leg room. Honestly not the best idea for a cinema is a film is a little meh but was bloody comfortable.
It was sold out. Completely. I was lucky to get my odd one if im honest. Proper mix of ages as well. Clearly everyone really did love the show.
Trailers The Drama (exciting) Project Hail Mary (yes) Mortal Combat (maybe) & there was another one but i cant remember what it was, maybe it was the Mummy oh no it was How to make a killing which i saw earlier this week.
& then the film didnt start… we had a message from Cillian. Peaky Blinders has a select release in UK cinemas before arriving globally on Netflix in 2 weeks time so it was basically him telling us not to spoil it for everyone else, which was nice & cool.
& then the film started… maybe its because i rewatched season 6 in the last 2 weeks that i was in the mood for it but it was exactly what it needed to be.
Cillian could act out the yellow pages, i know i dont like the way he looks as Tommy, but bloody hell he is the man & his aura seeing him as Tommy on the big screen incredible. & it took a little while to put him in the hat & coat & then the horse, but if you dont watch that moment with nick cave playing in the background & you dont get goosebumps i feel for you i really really do, because its iconic & it wonderful & amazing. Its the kind of moment people will remember long after watching the film. They also ages him as well, he kept some of Cillians greys.
There are a few deaths in this & a few people who die on & off screen that you really feel for & go oh god no at. Its rather clever. It honours the show in a good way most of the time. I have a friend who also saw this &was pissed off with someones death & i do get it but it was always going to happen at some point. But the way the funerals happened & how it was presented & showing the grief & Ptsd even if you are someone as loud & proud as tommy proves that we all struggle a lot.
If i had a penny for every time Cillian has been involved in a factory fire fight, id have 2 pennies, which isnt much but its interesting that its happened twice.
It felt more like a tv finale that a film, like they had been told they could extend the last episode. But because it was a film i can see why some people thought things were rushed. But lets be honest, the plan was to only ever make 3 seasons & then make a film so for it to get to 6 & then do this shows the stories power.
It didnt hold back on the violence, it was still as grim as it always had been & left the deaths lingering for lasting effect. I also think its powerful that the showed how mental health &war really do effect certain people in life & scar them for all sorts of reasons in the future.
I was not expecting Stephen Graham to come back but im glad he did. Also the new additions were good. I do get Rebeccas character but it got weird, but ive always thought all their witchcraft stuff in these film today with the gypsys (they call them that not me) was a little over the top, so it did fit in.
Going back to the bar was rather spectacular. He had to go back & he needed that talk at the start of act 3.
This delivered exactly what i wanted it to. It didnt make me cry but it is the perfect finale for the peaky blinders… or is as 4 days after it premiered on netflix 2 weeks later it then announced some of the cast for season 7, so its going to be interesting to see where we go from here.
But yea this is a film i will remember for a little while & is always going to have a special place in my heart, even if its just by order of the peaky fooking blinders…
