Cue the theme tune. Dur na da duuuur daur na daaaa. Yep time for Indis final outing on the big screen. Harrison Fords last chance playing everyone favourite Male Archaeologists, who is still connecting to little kids to this day, which is bloody impressive. I’ve watched all the Indi films again in build up to this one, after a friends said oh why not, so i did. So lets see exactly where this lands in the grand scale of things.
I didnt see it opening day on the wednesday (which upset some of my American friends as we got it 2 days before them, & they got it the the 4th July Weekend on the friday). It was a half full cinema which was good. I think a lot of people are waiting to take the family though at the weekend. But based on this & it being all but sold out on the wednesday its hopeful for Indi for sure.
Trailers, Joy Ride, Barbie, Mission Impossible, The Meg, Oppenheimer, yea that was a lot of trailers, but this is the start of the July movie madness so i kind of expected it to be trailer & film over load for sure.
& then the film started… Harrison, you still got it mate. I dont think you ever lost it, but you still have it for sure in your 80s.
At no point during the film did i sit there & scream MADS! IVE MET HIM! Im very proud of myself. He was so dark & sinister. If you need a villain you call Mads or Ben & they will deliver for sure. Oh he was so horrible & ruthless & just had to make it so dark. You also slightly felt for him at the start a little & then he went full on evil afterwards, which is always good. A hero is only ever as good as his villain.
Harrison bossed it as i said. He may have left a few steps in his speed, but he still went for it & took control & you could see he was actually really enjoying with the people he was working with & the story he had to tell. He knew this was farewell to Indi & he owned it & it was all about him.
The De-ageing of him was really good too. So often its been a bit squiffy recently, but i think watching the older Indi film made me recognise where he was at that point in the films, so it helped there. It was a very good job they did. & that opening sequence was very cool indeed. Also shout out to Toby Jones as well for that scene & being so sheepish throughout it.
Phoebe (from no on referred to as PWB) was so cool & was living her best life in this film. However there were a few points when she was looking slightly near the camera, & i was waiting for her to go full Fleabag on us & talk about stuff & she didnt. It was like the film was teasing us, especially when a hot guy in scuba gear turned out, it needed a look & the words NECK & YUMMY to be said, because that so would have worked.
There were so many easter eggs & throw backs to the original trilogy & references other parts of the franchise or Lucas films. It did a really good job, especially with the last minute hat grabs, where does it hurt, friends & family referenced along the way & sorting out a few mistakes that the 4th film made. It did a really good job & acknowledging where it came from which some legacy sequels get wrong quite a bit.
Now there was a surprise about half way through the movie that happened for someone i had no idea was in the movie & i was like what the hell, omg this is so cool. They arent in it for long but i was having a mini freak out. Unless id completely missed that i wasnt expecting that at all.
My favourite sequence of the film, is the escape in the parade & everything that goes on there (yes to Boyd) but it was cool & so cleverly done & used everything it could possibly do. It just kept adding drama to it & i was sitting there going ooooooooh this is good & im invested. I know it was only the end of act one, but still it was just ahhhhhhhh i was on the edge of my chair watching it.
As far as the adrenaline that comes after the Auction (which was fab) & that multiple vehicle choice & shiz going down, in that TucTuc. I loved that. It was very well done & was really fun to watch & you sat there & looked at certain things & though oooh yes thats clever thats cool. I mean its not the best car chase this year, but that was bloody cool.
Every time the score dropped & the wip came out, i felt myself smiling. My brain was going this is proper retro indi here, its living up to the hype & delivering & is doing the fan service we all need as avid watchers.
Act 3 was very clever, very very clever. I liked that, but i cant talk about it because it would spoil it all for you. Thats not fair.
It also called back on a few things very well, stuff the 4th film didnt do well at all but this one really did, a little thing mentioned near the start was then brought back up & it made something very clear.
This did work it. It was a lot of fun & i smile & gasped a lot throughout the movie. I had a lovely time watching this. Is it the best Indi film? nope. Is it top 3? yes. ITs well worth a watch people, especially if you watched the shambles that was 4. What a way to say goodbye to a action hero icon.
