Its time for the Taylor Swift of Cinema at the moment. Yorgos is back with his 3rd film in less that 2 years ( we got poor things late) & once again he has brought Emma Stone along for the ride in Bugonia. Im intrigued & slightly freaked out by the trailer ive seen & early review ive read so im looking forward to seeing what i think of this.
For a sunday at 5:30 it was pretty decent, if say screen 4 was half full which is always good. Lots of people with popcorn though which did freak me out a little, i wouldnt say this is a popcorn movie. A proper mix of ages to from 20 to 70 were in there.
Trailers, Keeper (probably not) Predator (probably no) & there was one more which was horror but honestly i cant remember, i know it did nothing for me.
& then the film started… Yea this wasnt his best, its not his worst but its just mid & weird.
I would love Jesse Plemons to finally get oscar nominated but know what is still to come i doubt he will, which is a shame, because fuck a duck he is incredible in this movie. Like Im saying that he is now second tier for greatness. Were not talking the likes of Hanks, Ruffalo & Chalamette, but were talking the batch underneath. The man doesnt miss, i just need to watch more of his work to push him up there.
Emma stone being good in something now is kind of the standard. But there was a point in this where i think shes just going through the motions & is a little bit like oh i have to pull it out the bag again here for you all. I mean its still stunning, but if i dont see this performance from her in a film anymore im like hang on what happened to her. Shes too good. Does that make sense.
I got the point of the film, & i was hoping it would just grab & hit me & make me feel all philosophical & clever & make the point worth it but by the time we got to act 3, i was to weirded out by it & its mid points were a little too drawn out that i just didnt vibe with it. So the ending as much as it was clever & thought provoking, it had been too wordy up to that point to make me care. It is the correct type of film to try hard & do this as well. Its meant to challenge but i just sat there going no youve gone too far with this. Youve over over talked yourself through it.
I did laugh a few times watching it. There were a few points where everyone else in my screening did too, which was good.
That Closet ahhhhhhhhh! Also does she work at the MTC?
Is it anything linked to pop culture that doesnt have Chapple Roan at the moment?
The last scene of the movie will stay with me for a while, very cleverly done & thought provoking but ultimately it was a little too drawn out to get there.
Nicholas Cage would have been screaming no no not the bees. I mean if im honest & you know anything about any type of film set up you know that bees are a huge give away for what will eventually happen.
There is a dinner table scene, which tries to save the movie at the end of act 2. It almost takes it there, but then it loses its way again & just draws it out a little to far before we get to the ultimate moment.
I was really looking forward to this, i was hoping i would fall in love with it & it would be one of my favourite films of the year, but no, its not & thats a shame. I get why people obsess over it but its not for me.
But please do me a favour & log the film on letterboxd… its worth it.
