Time for another secret cinema. I do like these, but tonight i know exactly what it is. Odeons clues were far far to obvious. So much so i ruined it by accident for the two ladies next to me. I was a bit like its raining do i want to go, but yea i do, i need some comfort & cinema is my happy place.
Screen 2 was sold out for this, im impressed. We did get about 5 people walk out & i heard some groans, but most of the people were late 40s plus, clearly they had all done the maths from the clues or they had all just gone oh lets do secret cinema.
Trailers, if i had legs, send help, wasteman, wuthering heights & the secret agent (so in a nut shell anything that would be an advanced preview or a potential other secret cinema)
& then the film started… my maths didnt let me down it was… IS THIS THING ON? The John Bishop biopic which is but isnt that. It was more fun than i thought it would be.
Now as someone who has been a John Bishop fan for a little while, i know the story about he & Melanie & how he got into comedy. There were too many niche little bits in the film that were so Bish which as a brit & a fan i know about but if you dont know this it would be completely random & youd sit there going hang on this is a bit weird where its not explained or its not rectified in any way at all. Also some of it was too Americanised for the film. I mean i get it they have taken the story & put it in america but i was just look at it at points going hmmmm.
You can tell John wrote most of the jokes for this & tried to modernise them & make them more american because it just felt like it was written by a comedian & not a funny sketch writer that so often so many american “funny films” are. You know the ones im talking about. It also helps that Will Arnett has good timing.
That being said Will Arnett is still better as a voice performer im sorry he just is. I know bish doesnt have holly wood presence in his real life, but almost everyone out shone will in this film. Hell even those 2 guys having breakfast when they all stayed away from home for a trip (one of which i was half way through watching & was like omg its the bad guy from mission impossible ahhhh). Yea they were all better actors than him. But all his friends in this were weird & i kind of wanted to slap them all.
The film was at its best when there was a chaotic organic family scene where everyone talked over each other & 5000 things were happening at once. It made the real life seem so relatable & as much as they were crazy i wish we had a few more of those instead of just lulling about. Also those 2 kids were so so good.
It was nice to see Bradley Cooper not be the lead in something he had directed which was good, but whenever he popped up in it, it was like oh heres Bradley. hed have been better to have maybe had an even smaller part in it. It took you away from the rest of the film.
This was still a sweet fun film & it was better than i thought it was going to be, i just wish it hadnt gone all american dream on us all & was just a bish biopic with some 30 year old coming up comedian from liverpool. Too much holly wood for me.
