Time for an advanced preview, im not sure how many more we are going to have this year, but its exciting still, to see a movie before anyone else does. Today its the turn of Nuremberg. This is a weird one. Its a sky cinema movie which means it will have a very limited short release when it is properly out in a few weeks time, as Sky want it on tv asap. So lets see if its as bleak as it should be.
Half full is pretty good for a tuesday night. Part of me was like why are you bothering girl as the weather was not nice, but i had so many people ask me if this was going to be good that this was the only real time i could watch it. I also think i was lowering the average age, most people were minimum in their 50s which i get.
Trailers, no other choice ( looks cool & odd) Sentimental Value, Marty Supreme, wicked for good & Eternity (thats our next advance preview).
& then the film started… Oh this could have been must watch but it stead just missed its mark a little at points.
This is not for the fainthearted. So much so that the BBFC warning card actually had some people get up & obviously go & complain to staff. Because at the start of act 3 they use actual recordings & photographs from the camps during the second world war. ITs grim & horrible to watch. I felt sick a few times, but its also very important to watch. Not just for history but for the state of the current world right now, where people are being murdered for no reason by other governments or their own, its just atrocious that some of the world have not learnt from history at all & it petrifies the rest of us.
The main these other than getting ready for the court &the biggest trail in human history was the people back in the 1940s & 50s saying we need to do this to make sure it is never repeated. I mean my sentence above explains that a lots.
This did at points feel like this should have been a tv show. It was like every 20 minutes had an act 1 2 & 3 tying things up for it. & then they just ran out of parts to do this with & were like we cant make this into an epic series like Chernobyl or something like that so they turned it into a 2h 30 film instead. It also lead to a lack of consistency in the pacing too. We flew through some bits which we didnt need to but others we got the time for it. Almost like they knew not to cut that bit but knew it would have been too much for just 1 bit of tv.
Can i be honest, Leo Woodall was the start of that film. I wasnt expecting to have that kind of reaction watching him but he was so compelling. Considering hes only just getting going really. Also Michael Shannan as always is must watch especially when hes given time to talk & interrogate. However Crowe… your losing you magic. Im sorry you are. Too many recent performances arent even 50 % of of your potential. I know it cant all be gladiator but come on mate, you can do better than this. You all also know what i feel about some of Remi’s acting choices over the years. It was too much for this movie.
Nothing in the rest of the film except the real life footage used, did enough to shock you or make you gasp. It felt like it lacked the purpose to make you feel involved in it more. Even the actual deaths & executions of people in the film didnt have me shaking or like yea they need to die. It just went through the motions.
Richard E Grant randomly turning up for like 10mins was a bit of a hang on moment for the movie.
So much of the build & the tension kept being wrapped up. Like when someone went to leave, it didnt take long to persuade that they should stay & make a difference. People who were kidnapped were suddenly free or fine. It just felt weird.
This film was 2h 30mins & yet it felt rushed & not complete. It just lacked & wasnt good enough for you to sit there going this is a classic war film. Its not revisit able like private ryan.
This films had some balls but not enough to make it anymore than an okay movie. Im glad i have seen it but i wont actively search it out to see again. Its one of those one & done but with a very powerful beginning to act 3.
