This films been hyped for a little while over the last few months about its intensity so its time to see if Him which has Jordan Peels blessing, is as good as it is billed to be.
My 6pm showing had 10 other people in. I counted them yep & id say everyone was in there 30s so it wasnt like i was out of place for this film.
Trailers, keeper (probably not) Black phone (yes) Bugonia (yes) & if im honest i cant remember the other one, im sorry but it wasnt something that i was bothered by. But i did like that there was only 19mins of adverts & trailers that was very nice.
& then the film started… well that was very odd indeed.
I was not expecting to see Jim Jefferies in any film in the cinema in 2025, let alone a sports movie. He was then like most people in this film filled with questionable motives, but then by the end of it, i actually felt sorry for him & was like ahhhhh when is fate was decided in this film. This was not on my 2025 bingo card even 15mins into the film. Crazy.
The film started off okay, like i got it. Its the opportunity you got to go for it, then it got surreal, then weird & then there were a few scenes in act three, including the last one, where it completely lost its way & i was just like is that really necessary. I mean yes it was but then what. It got weird in too weird a way for me & you all know me, you know i love a bemusing plot that makes you think.
The violence was to shock people, i dont think it needed it at time. I get that it was meant to show the drive & what you will do & give up for what you want & show others sacrifices but its just to much at points. Espcially the ending. Like the bit before the ending the actual show down, i got that, it had to be that way. But then it left so many unanswered questions. It just frustrated me. We didnt need that amount of blood violence & death, let the rest of the film speak for itself. Show what sacrifice is, make it intense just dont bludgeon people at point break range with an american football.
I get fandoms & cult & over obsessions i really do if you go all in you do, but some of this was too much so much so that with the way it ended, how does it then move on from there, theres going to be so many questions to be answered.
This film has my kryptonite in it… UPERTY PEOPLE! URGH! They & the film looked down on us, which considering the lead was meant to be a kid who came from nothing & built his way up, is saying a lot.
This felt like this had been filmed during the covid films, i get that this is an inexpensive way of filming but i picked up that vibe very quickly & it no longer feels fresh for horror films, im sorry it doesnt.
I actually at one point as we were going through the days of the week at the training camp was getting a little bit bored. I was sat there at one point watching wednesday going oh come on get to friday please.
This film is a classic example of having a good idea but failing to execute it. It didnt deliver it could have had 3 different directions to send it in act 3 & it went with none of them & bottle it. It didnt inspire to make you think about the world & how high valuable sports property are treated, it just was churned out at a meh place.
I was hoping for so much more from this, but it just never really got to the level i was hoping for. Im glad ive seen it but this was just bang average & in about 6 months people will be like lets watch this on netflix & it will end & they will almost, except for that last scene, forget the rest of the movie instantly.
