Happy National Cinema Weekend, where almost every cinema is doing standard tickets for £4 or the normal price but no extra on top for the popcorn & drink & are even reducing an IMAX ticket to a normal price, so if you want to see The Odyssey this is your chance. I usually avoid going to the cinema this weekend, to give everyone else a chance. However when your cineworld arent showing the film they have advertised for months & the local independent is in their fancy new screen, you should go to it. So here i am at the Dome for the Death of Robin Hood.
If im honest my local cinema wasnt set up for cinema day, we had someone in not just the wrong seat but wrong screen which delayed our film, people were trying to get into other screens, & there was a wedding going on plus people were busy trying to get £4 tickets for next wednesday thinking it was all week. Oh well. & over all after the delayed start to my film by 5mins while they sorted seats out, there was only maybe 30 of us in my screening, that arm chair is nice though.
Trailers were werewolf, the uprising (which is now apparently robin hood), brad pitt & his dog & Digger (which i get more hyped each time i see the trailer for it).
& then finally the film started… I was expecting it to be grittier i am not going to lie.
The opening 30 minutes were full on & violent & gritty & what i was expecting for the majority of the film. When it went for it, it really did. It killed people like they were in game of thrones, including kids, it hurt people to make the revenge even more bitter. It just went for it & decided we are going to punish people. But after that first 30 minutes it didnt go back to that at all & that frustrated me. We went from dark & gritty to just padding it out. It let me down.
I was at least hoping for a proper villain, & the bad guy we got who wasnt even a bad guy leaves with at least 20 mins of the film to go. The revenge was never had. I get that its all about regret & The choices you make & the story, but i was expecting maybe some flash backs or maybe a few more stories to the past but no, we just meandered. Instead of learning more things about the back story i know that the trees are Apples, Pears & Elderberries. I know madness.
Jodie & Hugh were rather good, i mean when arent they, but at times i could tell their performances could have gone further, but the script & the lack of character development until that last 5 minutes felt like they just werent given a full on chance to get going with this.
As someone who donates blood when she is able to, that is not the best way to do it. Just ewww. The person in the seat next to me whenever they took someones blood looked away. But they were on the edge of the sofa when someone got stabbed.
The links to the original Robin Hood could have been better. Would he really have forgotten that person who was also there with him. Little John clearly had other filming schedules as he just after 3 scenes then written out. It just felt like a wasted opportunity. I get if Robin doesnt feel like robin anymore, but maybe make us all as the audience believe it was him once. Have some more ptsd moment please. Shout more. You wouldnt just brood (& trust me i am a brooder, & even i let it out sometimes).
Some of the scenery was wonderful, both on the island & on the mainland, that opening in particular it made me feel cold to my bones. I do have a question if Dust baths are real things people would do back in the day though?
It was well acted, but it just felt like it had been put on hold. It just needed to push itself to be more of a tale or revenge & guilt & acknowledging the past instead of just hiding & subtly succumbing at the end.
This film had all the makings to be a good film, but it just missed some of its mark, it was still good but it could have been so much more in so many ways, the opening of the film proved it could. Its like Robin needed to remember who it was.
