Secret cinema time. Its been a while, so fingers crossed its a good one.
Today was an interesting one as well. Vue werent showing it so had no run time & odeon genuinely forgot to put up clues. So i had no idea what i was walking into. My wish list was for 1) Coyote v Acme 2) Tony 3) Sunny Dancer (although i have that booked up for friday now ive seen oak street in advance). So lets go see shall we.
Screen 7 was an interesting place to put us. Its the smallest screen they have. Oh well. It was sold out as they had to put another screening on. I did think about moving but was like nah im staying in this one. It wasnt sold out though. My cineworld still have aircon issue so there wasnt any in there so it was at 80% capacity.
Trailers (which didnt help me think for it) were Mutiny, One night only, Digger, Pressure & the weird horror film no one in america likes i think it was death becomes her or something anyhow a big no from me.
& then slowly came up the BBFC board to reveal that tonights secret screenign was… TONY!
I was very secretly happy about that as its now only a limited release this week & it was the one of the three i most wanted to see out of the friday releases.
Dominic is very quickly becoming one of my new favourite actors, this is 3 for 3 for me. This, now you see me 3, the holdovers, all phenomenal acting, all different characters, he is really caring about his art & acting & he was completely believable in this. You genuinely couldnt take your eyes off him & he was sharing a screen for most of the movie with Antonia Banderas. yea i know, hard to take the light off him. He was the brilliant head chef in this. I loved him too. Maybe their chaos was what made it so captivating. I mean shooting fish in the sea why not.
I have since, as i saw this advanced, seen interviews where they say this is based on a couple of his summers learning to be a chef into one intense summer & that a small amount is fabricated, but if this is what you can achieve by bullshitting your way through life to everyone its crazy. If even a small amount of this happened to him, its madness.
Leo was also very good, but he clearly had another role while making this to try & fit in as he disappeared half way through the film, however the little notches he took after he got with someone was so cringe & so 70s it was like ewwwwwww, but then your like actually yes men would do that & the oyster trick to try & get you into bed today if they knew it worked.
All of the staff in the restaurant & kitchen really did get on together, they all felt right & like they had a proper relationship. Like the banter felt real, the lines & insults were real. It all did just work & felt very organic to make. That being said considering this was i biopic of a famous foodie, there was minimal food & cooking in this movie. It was more coming of age than anything else. There were some questionable knife skills in this too.
Every movie needs a montage…
So Matt Johnson who made this also made & stared in the Nirvanna film i saw a few weeks ago, & i was so excited when i saw on the credits that the score & soundtrack was also curated by Jay. That made my heart leap that they did this together. This is their Rivoli… that will make sense if youve seen the film & show. It makes the whole vibe of the film make sense.
I laughed a lot at this film & the film also made me feel a little bit guilty about how people are treated & laughing at peoples expense but made you emotionally venerable to it. & then it would just water board him in his hammock several times, which is going to be rather iconic moving forward.
I dont think anyone left my screening for this when the name came up or during the film either.
When people are online tellign you this is a very good film, they are lying, they are under selling it spectacularly. Its wonderful, its full of heart & soul & reminds you all we all have a spark inside us that needs igniting. This needs to be on all your watch lists.
