To the Cinema… & Beyond…
Sorry you dont get to many opportunities to say that.
Its time for Toy Story 5, which if im honest i dont even think 4 was needed, but i am a child who went to the cinema aged 5 to see the original & was like ooooh this is cool. So i am an Andy. So lets see if 5 adds anything to the rest of the films.

I went to the 7:30 thursday night viewing. Technically it opens friday but cineworld had showings today. I also picked this time to avoid little kids which was a good idea. It was almost sold out. Lots of odd millennials & gen z but lots of millennials & gen x with their kids who are late childhood early teens who want to see it but obviously toy story isnt “cool to see” weve all been there.

Trailers, paw patrol (nope) Cat in the hat (matt berry is a fish im in) Moana ( first time ive seen the trailer in ages) Minions (probably) Supergirl (most likely) There was a full 30 min set of adverts & trailers which i think is always bad before a kids film, booo to that.

& then the film started… this is the worst toy story film, but thats not saying its bad.

This film isnt all anti tech, it shows how it can be used for good. I mean it was tech that is the reason we have the Toy story movies anyhow. But it shows the bad sides of it. & also the actual real villain is well those kids. Those girls all needed their devices taken away. They were horrific. I may be a child that relates more to Andy than Bonnie, but she didnt deserve that happen to her. It shows if used responsibly it can be helpful.

If im honest, i think it could have worked without woody. I really do. & this is coming from the girl who worships Tom Hanks, so you know i always want more of him especially as hes getting older. I mean it always tugs at the heart strings to see him & buzz have some banter & argue a little but i dont think it actually needed it. I mean i get that we cant have all the original vice actors anymore as some have passed away but we should hang onto them, but Woody didnt need to be in the main story in the room & adventure, maybe he could have just been the voice on the walkie talkie. As much as its cool to expand the universe with new toys, i do miss some of them a little bit.

That being said, it was about time Jessie got to be the lead & that was the part that made me cry when she got to a certain point & basically unpacked my childhood in a box (minus horse girl shiz) but there was a millennial box & i was just like oh god. i knew i would cry at this film i just didnt think it would be at this point.

Did i know i needed Bad Bunny to voice a squishy pizza slice toy? Nope. Am i glad i have this now in my life… yes.

A lot of people online have been giving the Buzz subplot a lot of flack, but i really liked it & how it ended up tying in with the main story was very very clever. There was one point in the film where something happens to a Buzz & theres a look of delight on that specific Buzzs face which made my whole cinema go awwwwwwwwww seriously it was unanimous & in sync. Also i love the new Buzz tech too.

Someone pointed out Bonnie has now had the toys longer than Andy as shes not ageing up like Andy did. That hurts. No thanks.

New voice characters are good. They get a few decent jokes in. Conan needs to stop being in every film though hollywood, please stop it. However i was happy one persons voice was back too, i didnt think they would be but i got excited for that & waited to see the name on the credits to double check it wasnt just an impression.

It does show you how far Tech has come in 30 years & how Toy Story helped to change animation & cinema back in the day & that the storys are simple & sweet & good.

Maybe its me being sinical, with no kids, but this felt like it had lost some of its magic. The message as always was strong & one for adults & kids, however it did just feel like this was made just to be another banker for disney. They know their live actions have been slow recently so needed something to make sure they had a good year animation wise.

I still enjoyed it & left my screening humming the taylor song from the film, but its not as good as the original 3 or even 4. Its still good & you could watch worse animation than this but when you compare it to those first films, its just not as good.
