Who wants an advanced screening? who wants 2 advanced screening in 3 days? me i do… time for a tuesday night trip to screen 1 to watch power Ballad the new paul rudd comedy. Hopes are not high for this im afraid to say. Paul has very much lost his spark recently which breaks my heart to say so fingers crossed this at least has some good songs in it.
For an advanced preview, i was a little bit shocked. There was maybe 50 people in screen 1 for this. Screen 1is the largest seating my cineworld has, & it looked sparse. mainly millennials as well.
Trailers, Finding Emily (which is the other advanced preview) Masters of the universe, Scary movie, tuner & One Night Only. A mixed bag. Im trying to work out if i need to have seen all the other scary movies ive only ever seen the first back in its hay day as a teen.
& then the film started… Mr Rudd your spark… its starting to shine again.
For a while i have been saying Paul has lost his way a little, but this was made to set him up so all his jokes landed. You can imagine someone like him being an ageing rockstar, who is now a wedding singer with a local band, who wishes it was more. Weve all seen those bands at weddings & we all appreciate them &they give us a fab night & then we never hear from them again, but they are in the moment & good for the vibe. Paul Rudd was perfect for this. It just worked & his relationship with his band & family felt real & had chemistry. HE lead this movie really well.
I laughed at a lot of the jokes in this film. When i got home i realised this is actually an independent irish film, written & funded by them, so that explains why the jokes felt like they belonged in real life & just how all the normal stuff flowed & worked.
Obviously being a wedding band, my foot was tapping to all the bangers bands like this play at weddings. However the main song in the film How To Write A Song Without You… fucking incredible. I was so angry when i got in my car to drive home from the cinema that i searched for the soundtrack on spotify & it wasnt there. What do you mean? & then i remembered this was an advanced preview. the films not out for another 10 days. IVE GOT TO WAIT 10 BLOODY DAYS! NOT FAIR. I also prefer the Paul Rudd version, & not the Nick Jonas one. I know its more polished the Jonas one for lots of reason but no i like the authenticity of the original.
No way would that guy get a US visa that quickly & then get into the country especially with the past he had explained, but it was comically clever & lead to more carnage. He was an epic best friend
That was clearly the O2 wasnt it? When they got to try & party crash. I was looking at it going yea ive been there ive seen that.
I love the life parallels points at parts of the film. That was very clever. Showing what those that have desperately want o hang on to & dont realise & how everyone else is just getting by waiting for that one moment & how actually we dont really need the fame glory &money we just want the recognition for our part in the machine, be it large or small. We just need to be told sometimes that someone is proud of us & that we have our own little place in the world & we do matter.
Nick Jonas was good but i think he was just playing a version of himself at points. I dont know enough about him to tell you if its acting or not. Also Jack Raynor, i almost wanted to punch him in the face as much as i did in Midsomer with this film (which says a lot).
I like how every wedding had a different theme & vibe to it & showed that love is love who ever you are. You cant help who you fall in love with. & yet they all hired this band to perform at it. Shows that if you good you do get some life & time.
I dont think we actually needed the last shot of the film. I get why they did it but peace had been found & we all knew what would happen. Im guessing someone went actually we need that last moment, to make sure everyone in the film understands what did happen.
That party crashing in LA was carnage, i loved it but it really was bat shit & wonderful & everything kicked off at it. A complete parallel to the first meeting & jamming session in that stately home with all those instruments.
Sometimes all you need is a happy music based comedy film with a little bit of craziness & jokes in a world thats all doom a gloom, a little bit of sunshine goes a long way & this film is exactly that. I hope when this comes out you all go track this down. We need an uplift sometime & i was pleasantly surprised by this.
