Cineworld love doing random seasons of movies, its how i saw purple rain a few weeks ago with a music season (not musical season) which was nice. At the moment they are doing one for Rob Reiner who died in December. Which i didnt realise he made all those film. Its been interesting to see. But the one ive struggled to find to watch on streaming has been a few good men so i booked it up as i love some courtroom drama.
I should now also point out that in the 3 weeks since i booked this up it has since been on film 4 twice (face palm) but i was liek no lets go see it on the big screen.
Screen 5 was half full on a wednesday night at 7:15 which is at least 100 people which is always good. I was the youngest person in there though, im not going to lie. I mean i do get it. I was a toddler when this came out.
Trailers, disclosure day, the devil wears prada, the mandalorian & grogu (hurry up) mortal combat & hilariously the christophers which i saw the night before its the first time ive ever seen the trailer for it.
& then the film started… yea this was one of those movies which needs to be appreciated.
We all know the iconic line, which was improv & not the correct one in the script, but this film is so so so much more than just then line. Theres drama, there twists, theres things going on that you as the audience are learning as some of the actors are learning as well. It political & powers & yes that line gets the headline but it really grips you & when it ended i was like were done really?
I had no idea that both Kevin Bacon or Kiefer Sutherland were in this film, so that was a rather nice surprise. I mean theres not much better in visual american political media that Kiefer going with all due respect. IT just hits so right. All that was missing were the words mr president.
I’m saying this more often… why doesnt Tom have an Oscar? Probably all the weird shiz i know but damn hes so so good in this. I know Jack was nominated & the film did very well with nominations during awards season, but to see how good he was back then before he became the ultimate action hero he is now, just shows how versatile he was. Also im glad him & Demi never were a couple. In the 90s that was such a thign to do. There were glimpses of flirting but nothing dramatic. It was more work tension more than anything else.
I am a sucker for a court room drama, im sorry i am & im glad to see that its not changed too much in the 30 years since this came out. It felt like it could have been today (a few less sexist attitudes obviously) with the intensity & the passion & how it was all going down. Everything being really paper based & old school big screen computers for everyone was the weird thing. So much filing & data crossing & planning, not it wouldnt even be a power point. It felt good for the 90s child soul inside me.
Everyone had good character development & i genuinely mean everyone. It well written & cleverly done. Especially dumping military exposition. At no point did i feel like i was getting lost with all the terminology or why certain rules were followed. Its very well put together. Orders are orders after all (although with the world today maybe thats a little unfortunate).
Why is it in america that if you have like 3 drinks your considered to have a drinking problem? even to this day. Like he had received some bad news & was getting over it that way. Thats completely normal & fine. I dont get it but its always the case.
Im so glad ive finally seen this. It was engaging & intense & was really enjoyable. Im starting to wonder why when i hit my teens my parents didnt show me this, why hadnt i seen this sooner?
