Happy Easter everyone. So what do you do on easter friday when its raining… go to the cinema! yep thats me. Im seeing all the family tomorrow so i am going to the 3pm viewing of the Drama, & i am wondering if this is going to be as mysterious as the trailer makes it out to be.
Screen 4 was all but sold out, basically the 4 broken chairs & the front row had no one in, ever other seat was taken up. There were people from the ages of 15 to 60 in there to watch it, so it proves these two have a universal draw.
Trailers, the new brian cox film, the christophers, Michael, The devil wears prada & the nice little tuscony movie that looks a little tacky thats out soon.
& then the film started… ooooh my fucking god.
This film in the UK got a lot of laughs, well in my screen it did anyhow. However i can imagine this plays completely differently to an american audience due to the subject matter. I had heard a rumour about what it was about & turned out that was correct. But yea i can imagine in some parts of america people would kick off a the screening for being what its about. This is why the film is good marketing because if your just a casual film watcher you would have no idea what this film was about other than 2 people getting married & some drama effecting them both in the build up. I like that. IT is a lso a conversation the world needs to have, not just americans or people in power, but its one we all need to talk about.
The wedding was chaotic. Complete & utter shambles & i love that it takes up most of act 3 i love it. We all laughed so hard & sat there going oh god imagine. Ive not felt a cinema feel so engaged in a drama movie like this in a little while. We were all locked in wondering what was going to happen next at this wedding &whatever you are thinking would happen, trust me it happens. It also shocked me that after everything they did just get to the wedding. Also how many speeches do you americans have at weddings? They always depict that everyone gets to talk at it… erm nope. We dont want all your stories. Just 3 like in the uk is cringe enough.
Robert & Zendaya were so good in this. I loved there chemistry & the way they tried to deal with it all. The photo shoot being cringe as fuck was wonderful. However whenever he mucked up he asked he if he could start again or do over & she was always like yes, but the one time in the film she asked & he kind of shook his head & walked away, that speaks a lot & i only realised that after watching it. Very very clever.
However Alana Haim… well shes going down as my villain of the film. I get that its not her fault, but her bad story was awful as well & then she completely kicked off & took it all to far & made it out like she was the victim in it all when it was actually her idea to have this chat. & then just the way she was around people. Oh she was evil & needed a slap in the face. What brilliant acting that is. She really did bully & manipulate spectacularly.
I likes the use of flashbacks that worked very well & it was very clear where the ideals of what was going on & what happened & why someone might feel like that or that something that tragic is the answer. It didnt glamorise the subject but showed how it could be anyone with these thoughts.
I like to think the woman running the photo shoot, is the continuation from Materialists. Its the same actress in it, so maybe that was her job & shes now happy & loved up or embracing being single getting joy out of doing this. Would make sense.
I like the idea of having a wedding tasting just to try more wines &get another free meal out of something thats very clever.
When it was ending i was like what so you mean its done. It was paced superbly & so well written that it just flowed even with an awkward subject matter.
For some people this will be a hard watch, but its an important one, which is well acted & is a clever story. It needed to just push it a little bit more to make it a must watch for everyone. I’d say go into it blind but for some people maybe thats not a good idea.
