Going to try not to spoil this for you as its only been on Netflix a few months, so if i do im sorry.
Why do you look at your Letterboxd so closely i was asked the other week by a friend when they said something about a film they had seen, & i said because my besties recommend me some epic films & you can see if you think your going to like a film before you even start it. So here i am again with another recommendation from the Letterboxd communities, this time its The House, which ive tried to avoid anything on & have waiting for the right clear state of mind to watch this in, which was the one thing people kept telling me when this was on their last four watched list.
They were right, you need to go into this with a clear head & i would also advise some natural pauses throughout the film. Mainly because there are three stories here & i thought they were all going to intertwine & mix within each other, but no there are 3 35 minute films to watch about the same house. so i went straight into 2 after the holy crap of 1 & actually had to about 5 mins in just go nope stop girl stop you need to process that one. & then i went back & started 2 again.
So story one was the darkest of them all. I mean it was okay to start & then it got darker & darker & darker & there was no light relief at all & it was just like are we going to get any hope from this one at all. It was full on & horrific. Even the design of it with those knitted felt dolls was scary & weird. I mean ive always thought those kind of dolls were odd anyhow but with this is was even freakier.
We never met the architect of that house & why they wanted the old how & how they manged to get their power over them & why it didnt work on some. For a 30 minute film, it proposed lot of questions & it only answered about 5 of the 25 i had. I mean i knew when they lit the fire place at the start it was going to be key to the whole thing, but it was very morbid & horrific to watch. I didnt like that story.
Story two, i just couldnt get over the fact that Jarvis Cocker was an estate agent rat trying to sell The House. I just couldnt get my head around it . I mean he was good dont get me wrong, but once my head had gone it was him i couldnt get past it. I guess its liek when i watch the new Robin Hood & i see Tim for the first time & my head goes you dont eat pigs… it had that effect.
I like the fish, that survived for quite a while.
I get the bugs & then the unwelcome guest metaphor & outstaying your welcome & if people keep imposing on you you just accept it, but considering how this Rat was before that moment, it surprised me he would be willing to go down that path, after everything he had done to sell the house. I just got frustrated that this was how it was going & that he wasnt going to get his sale & his epic open day how he planned to.
At least he could call his dentist tho, ive not actually seen mine (i mean the one im registered with i still go to the dentist) in about 6 years they keep moving me around to another person in the surgery who then asks the same questions they do every time. urgh.
The house looked the most conventional in this one too, it felt the most homely.
Story 3 was the best animated & the most human & recognisable story if im honest to real life (minus the flood but you know global warming & climate change, its possible). It was also the only story which had a “happy ending” & they learnt their life lessons in this.
I mean i would be pissed off if my rent was paid in fish or if someone came & ripped up my floorboards to make a boat. But there other than cosmic energy & tripping any explanation as to how they did all this & made it all & ended it so that everyone was safe & okay at the end. Also the sudden flood & mist wasnt explained & neither was its acceleration which looked like it had been one level for ages & Then suddenly just gone right lets flood more.
Also how would that at the end work? no amount of magic leaver or tripping would get that to float off, & what was to say there was anything else out there, why not just shut the doors & stay inside? you know….
All the animated voices were perfectly cast, either being strong or shy or naïve or just Helena hehe
The three different styles of animation all had highs & a few lows to them. & it was a very clever idea to tell 3 completely separate stories in the one house, i was expecting them to intertwine though & not just be 3 stand alones.
Now ive had a few days after watching it & have processed it, its bloody clever &The craft & story telling is amazing & im glad they didnt all have happy endings, not that the one that did have areal happy ending. I mean it did get dark & morbid at times, but so does life & a house does see you at your best & worst & i guess thats the point isnt it. That sometimes you learn your life lessons & grow & sometime you dont & cant move on.
