Spoilers

All sport is off this weekend, we still arent in lock down but there is no football league now as well as the prem & im not going to watch the 2012 Olympics rerun quite yet. So im going nostalgic & to a proper feel good film. We are taking a saturday off & spending it with Bueller ( bet the rest of the house joins me by the end of it)

You all know the story kid takes a day off school, sister & teacher knows hes bunking, its a race to get home. Hes a horrific person yet you still route for him. We did analysis of this film in English in high school so i could of just found one of my old essays to write about this but thats over 16 years old now, where the fun in that. So lets try & review this as the film goes bit by bit without trying to do it not in order.

I love the fact hes properly putting it on to his parents & then just being like fuck you to his sister, so much that she wants out of this family. My family werent like that when we were off ill from school. Except when i kept getting migraines & being ill so much so that my mum took me too the doctors after my 4th in 3 months to see if i was faking it & when i got there & they did their tests they went yep she suffers from migraines. Ha! Told you! I still do to this day, they are not nice, but its been a while since ive had one (as i am now posting thins in december i thought i should point out that since originally writing that doing an edit{shock horror i do edit these} i have had a migraine in the last 3 weeks was not good, first one in nearly a year). But whenever anyones ill we all help each other out.

I think this was my first experience of fourth wall breaking watching this film. Its really really good & done sooooooooo well. Thats what makes him likeable & why you do actually route for him hes going along with everything but he is you exposition as well, while actually being the protagonist. (i had written protagonist before it became a thing by the way.)

LIFE MOVES PRETTY FAST IF YOU DONT STOP & LOOK AROUND ONCE IN A WHILE YOU COULD MISS IT….. OHHHH YEAAA

I love that he moans that his sister got a car & he got a computer but in the 80’s he already knows how to hack the school system. Okay yes in the 80s firewalls probably didnt exist but if Ferris was real hed now be at Microsoft or apple running the cloud. Good for him not get a computer.

Buller, Buller…. HEHE i love that everyone in that class begins with an A then its Buller & then Fry…. thats fantastic writing & acting to just be so deadpan.

Ed Rooney is bloody hilarious, & i love it. None of my teachers were like that. His relationship with Grace is amazing too. All those pencils she just keeps getting out of her hair, hehe. He little sly come backs to everyone completely. & her impression when Rooney is trying to get back onto the phone, amazing.

Cameron is my favourite character. He is . I know everyone adores Ferris, but theres just something about Cameron that as a moody teenager really struck home. The fact hes all Meh & Ferris is just like come on mate lets do this. The phone call back when he says hes dying when no ones in the room & then Ferris calls back straight away going your not dying now get here.

Never had one lesson… yeah it shows Ferris.

Cameron sitting in his car going, is the best part of the film in my opinion, because everyone at some point in there life has done this. They have sat in there car after being begged to go somewhere & then try to go but no go & had a huge freak out. Its perfect. I love that the camera just keeps running & then you see him pacing back & forth in the background losing his shit as he cant decide what to do.

The kids at school all trying to save money for his kidney, worried hes gonna die is brilliant. But Ferris is still gonna be alive for someones party saturday. It does go out of hand with all the flowers at his house, the Baseball sign & the blimp. & Then when the police know at the end, thats amazing, especially when the mums like oh hes just home ill & everyone in Chicago is praying for him.

The phone call when Ferris then calls the school for his home work, while Cameron is on the other line. When i first saw that at school i was liek omg no way. Our teacher after that scene did tell us to never do that. Its an acting masterclass though from everyone. It just always makes me smile.

It is his Life, Love, Passion… It is his fault he didnt lock the garage… The car THE FUCKING CAR!!!!! Oh what a reveal. You just know its gonna go badly dont you. & that Ferris has to be jealous of Cameron’s crap car that he gets. Look everyone gets a crap first car, thats the point doesnt matter if you bump something in your first car. & then going to pick up Salone.

I love Rooneys run to go get Salone from school, thats brilliant. & the fact that shes all like what me i have to go… ITs my call. Ohhh & then when they come to get her in that car & the coat. Its iconic & she knows right then that its all a piss take, while Ronney is trying to be all compassionate about a dead grandma…

I love the guys they leave the car with. I know this is a little out of order but them doing the star wars flying bit & just driving around Chicago its brilliant. I know it leads to the Cameron freak out later on which is hilarious & then the eventual downfall, but they are just so cheeky & they just have the best time.

I understand why they had to go to the biggest building in the city, but the stock exchange… Only Cameron is bothered by it. Salone & Ferris nope to busy discussing getting married. I mean its sweet & lovely but it was literally just a 2min fill.

Then the whole restaurant bit. AHAHA! There are still people like that in the world today who are so up themselves & just look down at everyone. Okay yes Ferris is pushing it way to far, but the way he gets away with it is brilliant. It takes balls. & then the fact they almost get caught as his dad is there too ahhhhhh its brilliant. The whole getting in the cabs with the glasses & the hats in disguise. & the forth wall moving back into just standard film is epic.

Ed Rooney moving his glasses up in the air to spy, is the thing that makes me the laugh most in this film. Its comedy gold & i m sniggering thinking about it as i type. Whoever decided to do that deserves a pay rise. & then he misses that Ferris is at the baseball, while hes sorting himself out.

Then Rooney nearly catches him out by going to the house & realising the message on the door in repeated. Thats a proper ooouuuhhhh ohhhh moment it really is, thank god for that dog chasing him around, he gets away with it. Look at what Uncle Eds got for you, you cheeky fucker smash. Yes to all those flowers. & then the fact that Jeanie goes home to scupper him. I did when i first saw this wonder why Ferris was building odd stuff in his room. IT was to show that he was in bed if anyone came in, its brilliant foreshadowing. But her taking out Rooney is epic. She properly whacks him. I love the delay between him hitting the deck & the fact she runs off so quickly before he is laid out, that is bloody good editing. Shame he leaves his wallet.

Then comes the art, which as a teenager i was just like i dont get this. Now omg its beautiful. From the kids all lines up, to the actual art, there way of viewing it, Ferris falling in love & Cameron realising his self love looking at the lonely child. Its brilliant metaphors & makes the film relatable to everyone whos ever seen it.

Then comes the parade, which if you watch this & you dont want to sing & dance along to it, well something is wrong with you. It really is. I always wanna get up & do the thriller dance to twist & shout. ITs just brilliant. How he gets away with it i have no idea at all. But its just such a feel good moment of the film. I know the whole film gives this vibe but this is the glorious rainbow shouting look at me i am the pinnacle & the peak of this film, be happy audience.

The Cameron freak out is good, but its not as good as Ferris explaining what happens to teenagers when they leave & go to college & how your life changes once your more independent. Even now that comparison is still very similar. Him talking about looking at himself from the inside out is properly special too.

& then comes the car. The car with all the miles on that they are running backwards & hes so close to killing it but stops & you just think oh thank god its sooo close to it going. Then we have a full 2 min chat about not being afraid & then theres a 1 second lean… SMASH!!!!!!!!!!! OFF IT FLYS. It is so iconic & so brilliant & they really do total it & its just a wreck. But its the perfect metaphor for Cameron’s life up to that day & that he can now move on from it. I’m happy that Ferris is willing to take the blame for him, shows hes developed as a character too during the day.

Charlie Sheen in the police station with Jeanie is brilliant. It just so random & out there, but he completely changes her life & makes her appreciate her actual life & that she doesnt just have to be in her Brothers shadow anymore. Its brilliant that in those 3 minutes she goes from uptight bitch to the nicest person ever.

The race home is one of the coolest races ever. There is so much editing & the way the music builds & some of its in slow mo while other bits fly really makes the issue of time even more urgent & intense. Its stunning. & then just as you think ye hes home Rooney is there to fuck him over. I remember seeing that & just thinking no, no happy ever after bollocks. He did deserve to get caught tho after everything hed put everyone through over the day. Thank god for a sister, a wallet left on the floor & a concussed dog. Brilliant ending.

You are so happy he does get back in bed & gets to sign off properly & get away with it. I love when films end where they start like that same room same scenario but at a different time. Thats properly brilliant.

The credits are epic too with Rooney on the bus & all the kids, & then Ferris saying we all need to go home. more forth wall breaking at its finest.

Okay so this is starting to look a little dated, but because everyone’s lived a life as a teenager, it still relates & is brilliant. It just makes you think of when you were that age & what you tried to do & get away with. & that puts you back in a happy place.

Everyone is acting there socks off too, there is no bad performance, except maybe the delivery singing telegram from the nurse who likes to Fuck, but thats still bloody funny & i think thats the point.

Basically if you havent seen this film as a teenager you missed out on a joy of life, & if youve not seen it as an adult your not getting the pop culture references. It just fills me with joy & makes me happy & i cant recommend it enough. IT really is a feel good film, which even though it is now dated is still very relevant today.

Life Does Move Fast (as we’ve all learnt this year) Dont Miss It Peoples.
