Spoilers
Do not ask me how i have managed to do this but i have somehow managed to convince my dad to not only see Dune 2 at Cineworld, but also in screen X on opening day. I know. I attempted that & got it. Im not going to make him go to an imax (although i might next weekend) so its time to rewatch the first one & see if my jaw still hits the floor.
Can you see how far behind i am, im so so sorry, but i promise to get more written peoples i really do. Any lets talk Dune & go omfg at everything.
I just remember being sat there when we saw the end of part 1 in the cinema & how it ended & us both being like what no we need more, give us more & each time since when ive seen this (i have not watched this multiple times since its been on this DVD list) ive still sat there going its going to end in a min & then when it does end im like what do you mean thats it. Only Nolan do i do this with but no the dune films got me the same way. They are a feast for the eyes & ears & if you have the sound up loud enough you can feel those worms move & the stress & intensity of it.
I know hes only in it for like 4 scenes & then gets dramatically killed off but Jason Momoa actually shows he can act in this. Maybe its the loss of the beard or that he isnt the main guy in this or maybe that hes being directed correctly but i think he has such an under appreciated performance in this film. Its easy to sit here & praise Timothee (i will always adore that kid (& he will always be a kid to me)) & Rebecca & Stallen & Oscar, but for someone you not expect to be that good & always give the same performance he is good in this.
When i saw this in the cinema i was not expecting a naked Oscar Isaac… but we got a naked Oscar, filmed classily who then with his dying breath breaks his tooth to try & kill everyone & does a fucking good job of it. Now thats a power move for sure.
Also if they knew they were destined to fail, why accept it. I know they get there & its so much worse than they expected but still they all knew they were doomed. Its never dealt with panic really. The murders happen & everyone just accepts it.
WHATS IN THE BOX?! I love that scene. Its the film where no offence Timothee you were always destined for this, but those 5 minutes in that room, that makes you the star you are today. Yes you have range but its that moment thats tremendous. I think its the way he delivers the line how dare you use the voice on me. & knowing now what happened in part 2 with the voice & that moment its so clever. I do love the voice as a plot device too & how its takes training but works well.
The main siege is very cleverly filmed, its full on & people kick off & die & bodies go everywhere but its done in a very stylish way where you feel like your in the battle but you are also helpless with them running into the danger.
Each time you see the worms, its wonderful. It is the moment that does make you remember you are watching sci fi & not anything in the real world, but from the first take down of the spice rig to the run across to safety & then when she tricks people into following her knowing shes going to die, is very clever. I like that one the most. But that shows how good a world they built. I believed those space ships were really. I looked at everything that was cgi or not from our world & full on believed it. It took a few worms for me to realise that actually this is an work of fiction. This isnt here.
All the other houses just sit by & watch all this happen. No one else bothered to turn up & try & claim the spice at the same time? Stupid of them.
Those suit, brilliant. We will learn exactly how valuable water is in the next film, but when their help is stabbed & the water leaks from her suit just before her attempted escape it was really heart breaking.
The score is fucking magical. Seriously Hans its wonderful & gives you goosebumps. But its the fact that it just silent before a couple of sieges. Give you chills every time. But even the sand movement from that little mouse… it just works so well. Its such a delight to hear a movie as well as watch it.
So why did they when they know they were going to a fight to the death still put on those protection shields knowing a few hits would mean they would die? I get timothee in the training room had it but its not practice anymore. But it shows how far along cinema has come from the 80s.
How did he end up on the celling after the assassination attempt? Ive never quite worked that out.
The visions are really useful. Especially as i have now seen part 2, but at times you forget that you are heading to go & meet Zendaya, & then with 10mins to go there she is out of the blue, youve genuinely forgotten your going to come across her. Now that is good film making. Someone so heavily teased in the advertising & in the flash forwards for you to get so engrossed in the film that you forget about her & Bardem shows what good story telling is.
I always gasp when it gets to the fight at the end & shes like hes never killed a man when hes asking do you yield. I always forget that & it makes the death even more important.
I love the little pulsers used to attracted the worms. They are so clever & genuinely give the film a natural beat as to how things always start off calm but chaos is going to follow.
No offence but if you are going to give birth to the messiah why would you call him paul? seriously? no offence to any Pauls (my cousin is called it) but you know its not a very all seeing name. I would say then again thats the point, but hes born into two birth rights & his dad had an epic name Leto so you know. Paul feels a little off.
Theres one point when they land/crash on their escape. The calm & panic in all of that scene is wonderful.
Also hes only effected by spice when its suitable for the plot, which is a shame but as we will learn going forward theres more to be said.
This is what modern sci fi films need to be like. Action when its needed. A story that can be told from the past that sums up the current state of the world as well. ITs well acted, beautifully filmed & a score worth a thousand choruses. If you dont enjoy this movie i feel very very sorry for you. Its spectacular in every single way.
(lets see how far i can review write before december 18th this year for part 3)
