Spoilers
Spooooky season continues & were going back to the late 80s early 90s with Johnny Depp as Edward Scissorhands & another reason why i still have goth vibes. What a film & i cant wait to see how this now looks in 2022, lets do this.
For a 98 min film this packs a lot in. An awful lot in. But then also at the same time keeps it simple & short & sweet & just knows exactly what it needs to do to keep you on side with Edward & his life.
Depp as Edward is phenomenal. So shy & so eager to please & not say no & just find a place to belong & be loved & cared for by others. Its just so sweet & adorable. The ultimate goth boyfriend less him. How wasnt he even nominated for best actor at some award shows that year? Do you think the academies look back in hindsight & go fuck we messed that up.
His whole origin story is so sweet as to how he became the man he was. I mean its the fact hes created by Vincent Price the King of Horror & spooky season & he was almost perfect too & then he gave him those hands which he didnt mean to break & it gave him a heart attack. Proving that even in beauty & perfection their is pain & loss.
Do we still get Avon people? thats a genuine question… do we? Ive not seen or heard from any of them since about 2006. So that automatically dates it. I mean its good he is found by her so she can try & sort his scars out but still. Also that woman just decided for the first time ever on that day to go to the haunted house at the end of the road. I mean not that the rest of the place wasnt weird. I get that there were towns in america like that but that was very spooky & freaky indeed looking at that town layout.
All the neighbours were stereotypes soon. From the lady who sleeps with all the maintenance guys, to the peeping toms, to the people who just jump on the band wagon for it all who then all became so fickle at the end of the film & are so two faced. Be honest people. Yes i know it adds to the downfall & the finale how they are all so two face & how bad gossip can travel but its still not nice to see. They were all in for it why it was something novel & nice but otherwise they didnt give a fuck.
Water beds… bloody water beds like how 80s is that. Does anyone now still own a water bed? think they died out in the 00s. Answers on a postcard of pigeon if you own a water bed please. Also as much as thats the empty bed, you knew your daughter was going to come home at some point, why put the strange man in that room & the man with knives & scissors for hands too, it was never going to end well. Yes its funny, when shiz goes down but why then put him in the other room where you have other sleeping stuff when shiz goes down. Alan Arkin was right all along.
The different services Edward does are insane. The hedge cutting is cool, but then the cooking the food for the bbq, dog grooming & hair cutting. Its just redisclose that there werent accidents before all of that & the no one really gets help. Also being a locksmith is very useful, & yes i know he will do anything for the girl he fancies (Winona is so good in this) but he should have worked it out or she should have realised the manipulation too.
Sexual harassment form a woman in a film at the time this was made, when she tries to have sex with him, that didnt happen in films & isnt talked about enough either. Well done film for showing that as just being advantage being taken whoever it is male or female.
The ice sculpture minute is beautiful. I love it. IT always makes me well up. We dont get much snow here, so i would so be doing that as well. Its so beautiful & pure & sums up their life & love for each other. & then how its mirrored at the end of the film too, that until he went back home it never used to snow here in the winter & now it always does because he remembers doing it around this time.
The whole of act 3 after the snow is horrible. how he cant hold her, the accidental cuts, the turns on Edwards & the witch hunt of him. ITs proper cancel culture, when all he is trying to do is protect the people who see him more than just being a freak show.
That being said the fight in the mansion is a bit crap. Im sorry it is. Even for back then when they made this. I get the point & it had to end with Edward killing him, but it was just a little bit dull. It was when i first watched it years ago & it is still today.
It was also always really obvious that the little old lady was always going to be Kim, from the start, otherwise why tell the story, who else was it going to be. Also why had no one else in the time since then in her early teens had ever tried to sell that mansion or investigate it. surely there would be more stories & legends about that house.
Its not the most spooky film for spooky season but it was what i needed to watch tonight. It just felt so right & i needed some clam to go with the scares. This is perfect emo girl level entry to horror with a sweet story which does have a monster at the centre of it, but hes a beautiful monster. Yes its stood the test of time for sure.
