I know its only been a week since i saw wicked for good but so much has happened in that time, that it feels like ive not been to the cinema in months, but here we are friday night straight after work to watch the newest Disney movie & to see if Zootropolis (or Zootopia depending on where you live in the world) is any good.
Im going to be honest im writing this intro almost 3 weeks after seeing it so i cant remember the trailers & i know my 5:45 showing was about half full so my bad. I also am very aware of how far behind i am with reviews on all sorts, book writing & life has pushed these back a little.
& then the film started… It was okay & pleasant.
So since i saw this, this film has gone on to make the most out of all animated movies ever like 1.7 billion i believe & if im honest it shocks me. It was nice & there were some clever bits but it wasnt like inside out 2 last year, it was just an okay disney movie. Its not setting the world on fire, what did the world see that i didnt when i gave it 3 out of 5?
The highlight of the film in my opinions were the references to the horror films. Like there is a silence of the lambs section which went over everyones head in my screening & i was sat there howling going oh my god yes. Thats epic. I love it when animations sneak stuff like this in & those that know well we know & we see you & appreciate it.
Who decided that the Zebra Bros should be Roman Reigns & CM Punk, epic choice. Almost up there with having Idris as the police chief each time. Less jokes for him this time though.
As soon as we met a character in particular i was like yea they are going to be the bad guy in this, i could just tell it instantly. I know thats my fault for watching too many films & spotting patterns but it was hidden in plain sight.
I can see why kids will like this. But it lost some of its charm of the original. Some of the characters we met in the first one who were so important were relegated to two lines & no offence to the new characters (except the snake) but i was just like ooooh okay then about them. But it did take me for ever to work out the voice of one of the bad guys was the bad guy from the bourne ultimatum, i was angry when i letterboxd it afterwards.
The film does call itself & disney out for no original ideas & milking something to get money out of it. Self aware for sure. I do want to see the Zootropolis version of the Mandalorian & Grogu though.
He is a sassy fox, but hes not Fink. Im sorry Nick, but even if it wasnt Pedros voice Fink is the coolest sly guy doing foxy things.
I know its a kids film, but it needed to be braver & take more risks. It just crawled through the story like the sloths do. Im not asking for an epic im just asking for a little more imagination.
Your kids will have a good time, but it was just missing the disney magic im afraid to say. That hurst my imaginative soul & my inner child. It was pleasent but wasnt all that.
