My dad randomly sat there 3 weeks ago & went ill come with you to see this, lucky me woohooo. So we are heading to the connaught in Worthing to watch the cheap monday night showing which will be good together. Im amazed hes the person i take with me to the cinema the most (he doesnt know it next but next year we are seeing dune 3 in imax).
The studio screen i would say was half full by the time we got there. I did feel a little bit young though on the balcony everyone was at least late 40s. I guess they all watched the original donkeys years ago where as i saw it a month or so ago.
Trailers, Eternity, Avatar, knives out (my local independent is showing it) & Marty supreme, along with the local adverts for drama & the panto that is about to be put on.
& then the film started… think this is the least Edgar of all the Edgar films so far.
An Edgar Wright film has a certain spark to it. It does. Theres a charm to it, theres little moments that make you go oh okay. This one… i saw it maybe twice, but it wasnt sprinkled across it all. Even when you watch last night in soho, its there this one lacked it.
Glenn is almost there as the leading action man. Hes got the run, the charisma, & the fight & the stressed face. He just needs a better villain to go against. No offence to Josh or Lee but it always just felt like he was always going to get out of it somehow & get to the next day. Almost like he was playing on easy mode at times. At no point was i ever truly concerned. That didnt mean it wasnt still adrenalin filled & action packed & twists & turns as we went along cos it was full on. Also does Glenn now accept jobs that are going to require wearing a disguise? Always lots of fun.
Petition for Colman to present every tv show ever made. I know the man has so so much charisma, but damn id watch any tv show that man was presenting, because fuck hes got it. Loved every second of it.
Josh was good but you could also tell he had about 3 other acting jobs going on at the same time. So much of his stuff was all clearly filmed on one day or two when he didnt actually need to be next to anyone at all.
Now i knew Lee Pace was in this & when i heard the voice i was like oh okay, but there were several people in my screening who gasped at the full reveal. My dad as we left asked who was the guy in the mask & i was like a bloody legend thats who.
There were a few easter eggs, obviously the Arnie one is the most obvious one with the money, but there were some Edgar ones too. Im pretty sure someone said yarp or something being for the greater good at one point. I’m sure a rewatch will help me find a lot more of these.
It got violent when it needed to but not enough to make you think it was over the top. It killed people off when it needed to & introduced people at the right time to keep the pacing going well too. But then it got to a few too many set pieces to close together. It made some of the larger pieces feel less earned if im honest.
The over use of AI & Fake News was very important in this. It was tellign you how you can be manipulated to believe certain things & make you do anything. Something lots of people need to learn for today.
I believe this is more of a faithful adaptation to the book than the first film everyones been very keen to say that.
So i asked my dad what he felt as we left to go back home & he was like well it could have been better but that will be insanely rewatchable. & hes got it right. It just needed that extra push to make it incredible. ITs still good & a lot of fun, but this could have gone further to make it so much more memorable.
