Behold another early attempt at Christmas films by a big studio well before it is actually Christmas to get all your kids stupidly excited. Yay. Here’s hoping this is better than the nutcracker. Let’s see if the Cumberbatch can do this peoples.
Screen one is day was half full which is good but I do need to take a moment to address something with certain film goers who just piss regulars like me off.
As the trailers started a group of teenagers turned up & couldn’t decide exactly where they wanted to sit to see the film. They then all took a various selfies during the short that happens before the film & then talked throughout the first 20 minutes making loud snide comments like nah that’s never going to work, that’s unrealistic, blah blah. This did encourage a small child near the front to want to start talking as wel their parents told them to keep shhh. Then at about the 20min mark the cinema filled up with light as they were all obviously bored & were looking at there phones & talking about social media. At this point the guy 2 rows in front of me stood up left his 2 kids & left the screen. He returned 2mins later, & about 3mins after that a member of staff came in & asked the group to come with him. As they were leaving we heard one of them scream what do you mean I can’t get a fucking refund my ticket cost me £11. They had been escorted out. Yes for that man going to complain. No other disturbances for the rest of the film. Serves those kids right. Don’t have your phone on during the films people with full backing light talking selfies & argue over Kylie Jenner’s Instagram post. It’s just ducking rude.
Thank you as always for putting up with the rant it’s much appreciated.
Trailers were the spidervers, Mart Poppins, Ralph breaks the internet, & fantastic beast but like the most of trailer ever. There was one more might have been the dragon I’m not sure.Lego? I dunno
& then the film didn’t start. We had a minions short which was odd. They kinda broke out of prison even tho they didn’t mean to kinda thing. Kinda sweet but didn’t really need to see that first. The illumination bit before the Grinch was better than that. It was Kevin Harts bunny from secret life of pets going mad with sparklers & fireworks & then he sets off all the sprinklers & gets upset so the minion shuts it all off & hands his over making the poor wet white bunny happy.
& then the film started… I have a confession I’ve never seen any of the Grinches or read them watched them but have always known what has happened at the end, so I have nothing to go by. But I really enjoyed it. I did. If that makes me a bad person im sorry but I really did.
The Cumberbatch is the Cumberbatch you can not Deny that mans talent even though he is just a voice basically, but he was up staged. I’m sorry he was. By the grinches pet dog max. I love that dog he stole the show he really did. I want to see how max goes to get bones & helps his master even more. That’s a animated story I could get into.
That little girl was cool too her friends less so more of a hindrance but the reindeer’s were epic, even the 50 odd that ran away, & also Kennan from Kennan & a Kel who was so over the top about all of Christmas it was magical.
The whole setting in general was magical if im honest. Gave me a proper warm fuzzy Christmas feel inside that made me go yea this can actually all be good everything is going to be fine… maybe. It didnt muck up the traditional with the new & didnt alienate people who like the original. I think it hit its middle ground & went for it. Im sticking to my safe space & were not moving.
There were a couple of moments when i was the only person laughing at particular jokes. I can have a very dark humour at times so that was doing it for me but there was one bit i laughed so much that i did actually after i realised how loud it was was i whispered loudly sorry to everyone in the cinema. After all i didnt want to get kicked out.
Modern & old morals in this film for all children’s ages, & adults too. Proper tugs on the old heart strings at the end for the big reveal it really does.
& how can anyone not love baby Grinch oh he is the cutest thing ever. He beats a Porg every day (just not a Niffler).
Bottom line is the Grinch doesnt hate christmas, he hates people & 60% of my day i can relate to that completely, so i dont blame him for wanting to take their joy away, which he does in stunning fashion.
Its not the best christmas film ever, but considering i went in with really low hopes for this the fact that it made me sniff at the end (not cry) & i laughed through out & it made someone who doesnt talk about christmas until we get to November 23rd want to talk about christmas, it had its desired affect. Take your child to see this rather than the nutcracker. Trust me they will enjoy this a hell of a lot more. If it can melt my cold cynical heart & make me laugh, they will love it.
