As i drove to the cinema this evening, i was thinking to myself, you are watching this film for the sake of going to see a film, your falling back into last years ways. But i had heard a few people talk about Opus who has seen it the weekend before in america comparing it to many other psychological films that have been out recently, films i really like, so here i am trying to hype myself up for it. But the second i got out of my car i was like actually this will be fun.
I arrived as the trailers were starting so i didnt actually have time to count the number of people in my screening. I left a bit to late my bad.
Trailers, Accountant 2, Death of a unicorn, Drop & there was one more which was horror based which i have no intention in seeing at all.
& then the film started… Watch all the other psychological films instead of this one, as it was just ok.
I saw the twist coming a mile off if im honest, both times. It was like it was trying to do it to out shock you. Films like this need to learn from Searching & Missing for what you think the answer is going to be to then fuck you over, because they nail it, but this. Nah it just didnt have the same build to it. Maybe its because this is a genre i enjoy so watch them a lot. But even if it nailed one of the twists properly it was never going to be “rose where are the keys” was it.
Malkovich is good, but is nowhere near as unhinged as he should be. He is more unhinged in the two scenes in hitchhikers than he is in this film. Thats saying a lot. Ayo is good, but as a leading lady i think she needs a few more bits under her belt. She does carry most of the movie, especially when she is shocked or panicked. But all the while stuff is playing out around her, shes just going along with it. She does make the rest of them other than Malkovich seem forgettable. So much so that it was only once i got home that i remembered that she had a not boyfriend in the beginning & he turns up for all of like 4 seconds at the end of the film.
The Muscles, i get it but i also dont. Yes it shows your willing to be patient, but its only ever mentioned that once & then the hut is visited again. I thought maybe they would test their guests patience with maybe a few of them to try & open & then be like nope to them.
The puppet show seemed like such an important part to the plot as a promise, but was never actually really talked about at all other than on a notice at the start. It was never brought up in conversation at all.
I thought we would hear more of his music, maybe even as a score at points. But his album listening was so what i thought it would be.
The whole its us vs them has been done so many times before. I get that he wanted to put people in their place for not listening, but then why also invite her. The reveal at the end could have been anyone they randomly chose for this, it didnt have to be here.
Dont swipe at physical & print media film… fuck off.. she deserved it all for that moment.
We also other than the guy she came with didnt spend enough time with the other people who came to the party at all. We also didnt spend enough time with the cult either. All their skills were odd to. Did someone play the sims before this & make all those clubs for their families before then going ahh lets put all that into a movie. Thats what it felt like.
The bread… ewwwwwwwwwwww
There are a lot better films in this genre that have come out in the last 5 to 10 films than this one. Its worth a watch for the genre, but its not crazy or shocking enough. It just lacked. Go watch the menu or get out instead.
