I need to do sunday night films more often. I usually treat it as a weekend, but no i should treat it like monday to thursday, as work is the next day. However maybe seeing an intense horror film quite late isnt the best plan, but this is my only night i get to watch this. I have 3 other films booked up in the next week plus im out on wednesday so if i want to watch Obsession it has to be tonight.
It was almost completely full which was good. The seat next to me was empty which meant i could put my newly purchased grogu popcorn bucket in it (so glad i got hold of him). They were asking for id of people when i got there as it was an 18 & as i left the 2 girls leaving behind me went well maybe we shouldnt have used our fake ids that was intense. So clearly a few young gen z got in. Bless them. Real mix of ages. However if the film is meant to start at 8:20 why do you arrive at the film 10 mins in at 8:50 2 groups did. Not happy.
Trailers, all horror based, scary movie, backrooms, passenger & there was one with a nun (theres always a trailer for a horror film with a nun its the rules).
& then the film started… Well yea that was fucked up.
Now i know people who like crystals or go to those kind of shops are weird, but now after seeing this film, i am never stepping foot into one of those shops ever again. Even if one of my besties was like i want crystals for my birthday, im ordering them online. I knew they were weird & freaky. I also like how the girl at the start is all like mystical about it all & the guy is like what did you do. Its very telling.
The fact you doubt the wish being real is very clever, there are a few things that lead you to think that it could be a couple of other things. But then to talk about it being a mental health issue & it not being fully discussed is also important. & then so is the drug & substance excuse it could have been. It makes it feel like a little bit of a cop out at points.
Its grim. Theres no denying it gets grim. There are some scenes that get extremely uncomfortable, due to what you see & what happens. Im not sure whats worse the intenseness or the imaginary of some bits. It freaks you out a little bit that this is happening. I get that this is the extreme of this at points but its still unsettling to see. Its what makes it an 18.
& thats not even talking about the fact the wish was used & there was basically no real consent because when there are lucid moments you can hear the cries for help & for everything to be stopped. Once again its not all men but its always men & that man made her that way, which is unsettling, but shows (once again in an extreme way) how some women will change & suffer just for the man. But then its flips itself around & becomes extremely controlling & suddenly thats not okay when its the woman doing it. Yes its insane, but still its the double standards that he wanted that btu when she does it, its not right. Urgh men.
The ending did feel rushed, but i guess that because its so slow & intense for the rest of it that when shit hits the fan at the end of it all, it really does all happen inside like 15minutes & it is a wild ride. Unlike some films that try to rush the end though it does all actually feel like that would happen at the breaking point of it all.
The cat didnt deserve any of that, & we never really know the cat… or do we because if that online theory is right thats freaky as fuck & just so so wrong.
Dont you get your uni letters online in america? We get our acceptances here & offers there, feels a little odd that they all just keep arriving in the post. Also how old are they all meant to be. Because surely if one is waiting for letters of acceptance to get in somewhere they are all under 21 which means they cant drink & they are drinking in this film at bars as well as a party at the same time. Also i was expecting a really crazy party it was tame.
That music shop is a little bit fucked now isnt it.
There were points where this felt like a gcse or alevel piece of theatre youd put on to pass, but i think thats also due to the low budget & jumpy script at points, but i also think thats a little bit of its charm.
The hype for this film is very real & i am glad its done so so well at cinemas for such a low budget & no stars in it, its a triumph its taken on the box office with this original indi horror film. I can appreciate it & there were some bits of acting that really were stunning, but now ive seen it i probable wont be watching it again. It not a horror genre i enjoy but it was better than i thought it was going to be for sure.
