Spoilers
In case we get Lady Bird up here before this one… Thats 8 Oscar Films now watched 1 to go. One week to the oscars, its Sunday morning so lets put on sky cinema & lets watch Get Out.
You all know horror isnt my thing, if you dont know that by now… then where have you been hiding. Hence a sunday morning watch of this film before i get on with my day so i have the rest of the day to get over it before bed (plus theres 2 epic football game this afternoon). Mama Popcorn wasnt bothered about watching it either so sky cinema bring it on.
So basic plot, black guy Chris goes to meet white girlfriends Rose family. All seems well until all the other black people in a village filled of old white people seem a bit odd. Also Chris gets hypnotised by Roses mum to stop smoking. Turns out that they have been taking Roses partners who are black & have been transferring there brains into black people bodies so they can continue to live. Chris works this out a little too late, & then all the shit starts to kick off, hence he needs to get out. His mate Rod back home trys to alert everyone but noone takes notice. Chris eventually comes up with a plan just before he is going to be taken over, & starts taking people out, escaping with Rod in the end.
Why did i wait so long to be in the correct state of mind to watch this film. OH MY GOD!!!! it was fantastic. Its my kinda horror film physiological not just death & blood & guts & torture for the hell of it yes yes yes. I seriously could leave my Sofa, i was stuck on it going come on Chris come on. Even mama was like oh come on you can do it, so much so that she actually watched the last half an hour to see if he did Get Out.
All those years ago watching Daniel Kaluuya in Black Mirror in 15 million merits, he was amazing in that, then Babylon that police drama he was stunning as well. & now to see him getting all of these amazing film parts & just steeling the show. He deserves his Oscar nomination, he deserves his rising star award, & he is just brilliant. I completely wanted him to get out & show everyone up for what they were. He just did everything superbly.
That being said Lil Rel Howery as Rod, stole the show comically. He was just brilliant, i really wanted him to go back to the police at the end & go i fucking told you to them. He was brilliant, just every time something was suspicious going your being sold into black sex slaves. & his relationship with Sid the dog too. Thats the kinda friend you need in your life. We all need a Rod.
I never want to go to thank sunken place. If anyone ever tries to hypnotise me i aint going there people, no matter how bad my habits or addiction get. I am not doing that.
Im not sure that he put enough cotton wall in his ears to stop the hypnosis from that TV the second time. also why didnt he just keep it in, he must of know she would try to get him again. Clever idea though.
Why was it the phone that set them all off, does noone in that village have a camera phone at all, surely thats going to be a bigger problem going forward with technology. they didnt think that through either.
Death by antler heads is one of the more interesting ways to go in a film. especially for the guy that hated deer that was pretty darn cool. He should have hit the brother harder with that ball though, although we wouldnt have had the key stabbing.
How did she not realise her house wasnt burning down? & why does she eat cereal like that, no one eats cereal like that, thats an definite no no not going out with you if you eat like that. & i have some strange food habits people but that was going over the line there.
I like that fact that he still had a conscious & tried to save the house lady after the hit & run because of his mum that was lovely, shame she had to go mental on him though.
What happened to the other guy that was left that was black who didnt attack him. Did he just stay there with all those white people, did Chris & Ron go back & save him? Did he regain his soul & come back from the sunken place?
Horror may not be your thing but seriously watch this one people, its funny & scary & not to many jump scares, but you do feel dread & peril which could happen at any moment. In years to come people will talk about this film & how it did so well & it will become a modern classic. It deserves its day out at the oscars, it wont win anything though unfortunately.
Mama popcorn gives it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
