Spoilers…
Well with moving day getting ever closer its time my parents saw Tenet before i take it with me (although i have no bluray or Ps4 yet to play it when i do go). But i have this planned down to a t. I know when they may want to break or have questions so there are 3 opportunities to stop it & pause it for such things i have that all sorted. Although most of there questions will probably be met by me saying wait, just wait, i cant answer that yet. But i seriously cant wait for it to be over for me to have a conversation with people about it, not just those online.
I was going to write the whole review backwards but im not going to i mean i know my software can do that now but thats to harsh on you all.
Nolan is just the king of the blockbuster now isnt he. The scale in which he does things the efforts he goes to its just mesmerising to watch & feel & you do just think yea when im watching a Nolan film i really am experiencing something rather special, which is crafted with love & optimism.
Th star of the show isnt John David Washington or Robert Pattison, its Kenneth Branagh. To speak a villain, speak in a russian accent & then speak backwards in that accent stunning. Some of this threats without really laying to many hands on to many people are just chilling & you sit there & watch it & think oh my god. He ramps it up to eleven. Hes cold & an evil bastard & its just fantastic.
The domestic abuse & the threating of it scenes are amazing but really uncomfortable to watch. He really does have control of her & its not very nice to see. I think that is why it is so fitting at the end that its Cat how kills him. Its not one of the main 2 guys, she gets her revenge for everything he put her through & that is just wonderful & the correct thing to do as she now gets to live her life with her son. That was the only way he could die & They did it correctly.
I still have one huge question about this film. When he goes to meet Priya, before he meets Neil he is on the phone to someone saying about Twilight worlds… who is he on the phone to? I need to know people. There are too many options & its not an instantly recognisable voice from the rest of the cast so that really does do my head in.
The Sir Michael is the bit that makes me smile the most. He is literally there to drop the exposition & the plot while having lunch. It was like Nolan went to him if i give you lunch would you come & film with us for a day. ITs brilliant. & it does just make you smile that Caine is in another Nolan film.
When you first watch the film you know youve missed out on bits, but when you’ve seen it a second time you know where we are going & you can pay more attention to the exposition & why thats the case, especially when almost 2 hours in Arron Taylor Johnson randomly appears with no prior knowledge of his team or the back up team. It doesnt help that the score is typical Nolan & so loud & brash, it helps at point but there are some point when you sit there & go turn it down to an 8 please your at 11.
I was shocked being in the cinema when the film opens with the opera scene that really through me. I thought that was going to be the grand finale. Having all those people in that room how might die, i thought that was going to be it & That Branagh was going to take the opera hostage, so when it starts with that & that them rehearsing is part of the score was really amazing.
Were the wind farms ours? We have some 5 miles of the coast, they probably arent as all the boats go backwards past them, but i still like to think they are the ones i can see after going for a 2min walk. I bloody love windfarms they are the best.
When hes learning about the flow of time & it going backwards is so cool. You have to have pretended to drop it first, is such a brilliant concept. That is a short amount of exposition but it really is good & what you need. You do just need to feel the movie. Also the lien about a clipboard & highvi can get you almost anywhere is amazing. Also how did that guy know to leave a car there & that he would get in it. Also after this point does he ever need to use the Tenet gesture again.
You never drink on the job…. ooooh foreshadowing. & then later on when hes offered vodka on the boat he has it.
Bungee jumping into & out of that building is brilliant. Both JDW & Rob said it was bloody scary especially as Nolan had control of when it actually went to send them up into it. visually stunning.
The fight in the restaurant is very quick but being hit with a cheese grater ouch. also the kitchen just continues to cook as normal.
I know so much about Freeports from this film now that a couple of month ago there was someone on tv explaining them to someone who had no idea about them. I yelled at the TV have they seen tenet & then the guy at the end of it went to them watch 20mins of Tenet.
Tamwar from eastenders is in it & actually get to crash the fucking plane into a building. One epic. Two Nolan decided it was better cheaper & more visually sunning to crash a plane into a building that CGI it… wow i mean that take balls a lot of balls. I mean it is epic. The way they take out the staff & piolets & then the gold & then the crash & the mealy wonderful.
The fight forwards & backwards in the free port are just absolutely stunning the first time you see it you think oh wow what a fight & then when its later on in the film & you know hes going backwards is amazing. Its one hell of a fight both ways round & when you watch it you just feel oh wow. ITs so clever & amazing & you just sit there in awe. Epic work from everyone in that scene.
Did Nolan want Sir Ben Ainslie in his film & is that why they suddenly went out on those boats sailing? this is the worst part of audio in the entire film. I know they are on the boats but the shouting the score & the sea all just make it a little to much. Theres a lot of stuff you need to know from this scene, & it took me til the third watch to get it all.
When JDW is off doing all this, wheres Rob’s Neil? why is he not there? or even waiting for info from him. Hes just gone. Also who do we think Neil is? Im not convinced he is Cats son thats too obvious i think. I think he is truly from the future & has been going backwards & isnt linked. Otherwise why does he narrate the end of it, if he was her son thats the perfect moment to reveal it & have you all go oh for fuck sake.
The traffic chase & stunts again forwards & back are just amazing. I love that from that point onwards you film just goes with the flow & there is only one more point to catch you breath before we start to sum up everything. But yea using all those vehicles to get the weapon, getting away with it & Then all the backwards stuff happening which 20mins later you see them goign forwards is brilliant. Its propely oh wow wonderful & visually stunning. So much suspense.
I love how randomly over half way through a film we are dumped a lot more exposition as to who everyone else, why people have suddenly turned up & how going backwards works. You so concentrated like them on the job at hand that even tho its explained very quickly & that we suddenly have a load of new people to meet for like the next 45 mins that you just get it & it just works. Its brilliant.
The world moving backwards really is a moment when you first see it. The birds are epic. But when they say take a minute to adjust to everything, thats not just him thats doing it thats you to. You are now warned that things are going to get weird.
Hypothermia from a car fire brilliant.
I like how to protect people going back wards in vehicles if they dont have there own oxygen is basically putting them in a sealed cling film room thats kinda cool.
The final show down in russia where you are watching it both back wards & forwards for 10 minutes is amazing. The building blowing up is just wonderful to see that from both sides. Im not sure how nolan did that with no CGI, but however he did it Kudos. Its brilliant especially as someone watching where you are learning things in a mixed up order & that you are sitting there going hang on that will be important in 2 mins hold that thought.
Did we need the phone call to him while they were at the gate? At this point surely we all know they are saving the world & that the gates going to open & that the dead guys going to save them. It not like Nolan to be obvious if im honest. When we first seethe guy with the red tag at the start you know hes going to be one of the main people we meet on the way & when Neil starts with the unpicking earlier you know full well that its him & that hes dead by the end of it.
The end explaining that the whole film is a pincer movement like Tenet & that JDW hasnt fully worked it out yet & then in that 2mins at the end it all makes sense to him is lovely & a perfect round off to it all. Properly emotional that, not crying worthy but his realisation that its been him all along & the guy he meet a few days ago hes actually know for decades is lovely.
I love that JDW character also doesnt have a name hes just the protagonist. Thats brilliant. I was waiting at the end when he saves Cat, for him to say who he is & his name but Nolan doesnt do that.
So my parents enjoyed it, i did have to say lots of times just wait just wait to there questions & we did pause just before the first part of the car chase to get snack & drinks. My sister enjoyed it. My friends who have seen it are looking at me like why do you like that its weird its odd its not good. Obviously i need friends with better taste in films. I di get tho that this film isnt for everyone
I bloody love this film despite the fact the score is odd at time. Nolan just keeps pulling them out of the bag & inspiring the next generation to make something bigger & louder & so complex that yes it makes you think & theres a lot to get though in this 2h30min film but boy when you get it its worth it & its a far better movie for it.
As they say at the star, just feel it. & then you will get it. Give it a go & then give it ago again people & then if you still dont get it i feel very sorry for you.
Darn it Nolan youve done it again
