We are still in lockdown, doesnt mean we cant celebrate VE day in style. Yep Pops hasnt seen it before so its the perfect excuse to watch the legend that is Gary Oldman win his oscar. Time to feel a bit patriotic.

Gary Oldman Oscar Winner! At Long Bloody Last! So rightly deserved, so powerful, so moving & just one of those performances that when youve finished watching it you go WOW! It really is one of those thats a little bit special. I know they hand out a best actor oscar once a year (maybe come see me in Feb {honestly havent left this review this late due to that}) but this really was something specially. He truly channelled the grate man.

There is a moment when hes not Winston Churchill tho & he is Gary Oldman, even with all the make up & the voice & the style. Its when hes on the tube talking to the normal people, on the way to do his speech. Theres a moment when you just look in his eyes & you just see past it all & hes back to being Gary from the east end. That whole scene is so lovely. From being scared of him & like oh god its the prime minister to being like wed do anything for you sir we will stand up if you tell us too. Its stunning & its what british cinema does best.

So when i wrote my cinema club review, i said that the person who played King George wasnt stuttering enough but channelled Firth well as it was a good continuation. Based on the accent & the way he was filmed & his hair when i went & saw the film i had no idea… that it was actually Ben. Ben i am so sorry for saying you didnt stutter enough (you didnt tho) but that probably did explain why i didnt really like you to start with, its built in my DNA to not want you to win. Does show how good an actor Ben actually is as i didnt put two & two together. Ben you have my full support (you get me if youve seen the film).

Lilly James is good, she comes to life in this. Okay yes shes just hes typist but shes so much more than that. Shes the reason why he goes to the people. Its her being human that makes him realise that he needs to do something. Shes better than Scott Thomas, who just seemed like she was entitled now shes a prime minters wife , which lets be honest if i was the prime ministers wife ( i dont want to be by the way oooooooh no no NO) i would want things done a certain way too, but i wouldnt walk around like theres a silver spoon up my arse.

We’ve been to Churchills war rooms & bunkers in London. They either shut them for a while to film there or replicated them so well. Its stunning there, it really is. When covid is over you should all go. Its an eerie feel to the place but one of power & history & thats how the film makes you feel, powerful & proud & trying to do the right thing.

I love the cabinet war meeting they are amazing with the arguments & the coup & everything else thats going on. Its so full of drama, driven by long rants & impassioned speeches & arguments. It gets alot into these scenes which only feel like a couple of minutes long, but so much goes on that it puts you in the heart of the action.

The house of commons is a mess, in general not just the film. They are all so appalling & you just sit there & watch them on tv & think why have i elected you (i didnt the person i voted for didnt get elected darn it) you speak for me, not random politics if someone wipes there eye or not. Its always been bad for years, & thats what the film gets right about it.

His speech is perfect, absolutely perfect, to an inch. You just sit there & go yes yes yes Winston get everyone on side do it for us all get us over the line.

I do wonder did King George go & have that heart to heart in his basement . I hope so its very sweet especially with the bit about being scared & petrified & then being a man of the peoples. I really do hope thats not just a films artistic licence.

I still dont like the random dates appearing in the film that large with that big of a click over & that when it skips a day or 2 its doesnt go 15, 16, 17, 18. It goes 15, 18. Nah bad idea film. Just tell us the date at the start, the date of planning Dynamo & the date of the speech. & its doesnt need to be bigger then the lunch the palace put on for him.

The best way to watch this film is to watch the kings speech first, then watch half of this then an hour of dunkirk then the rest of this & then the end of dunkirk. Get the whole feel for the era ( i would then say watch Jojo afterwards but thats a step to far) & just go for it.

Its a film that makes you be proud to be British & proud of Churchill & of Gary Oldman for finally getting his little Oscar. Its a very special film & today is the perfect day to watch it. Happy VE day peoples.
