Me at the cinema is not a shock, god no. But me going to the cinema at 11:30 on a saturday morning in the middle of summer thats a shock. But id seen people who obsess over horror going this is a bit much at points & i didnt want to not be able to sleep watching it, so here i am early in the morning ready to watch Weapons.
Id say it was half full, clearly a lot of people like me going nope im not seeing this at 7:45 or 9pm bollocks to that. All ready to hide, proper mix of ages as well. from 18 to 75 id say. But to the group of 20 somethings that turned up 25mins into the film, what was all that about. Boo to them.
Trailers, together (probably) Keeper (looked weird) The conjuring (never seen any of them), Strangers chapter 2 (finally) The long walk (probably) & a brief Eddington one (woohooo, the film that meant Pedro coudlnt be in this we will see if he made the right choice soon enough).
& then the film started… I am very glad i went early in the day to see this at the cinema.
Im going to start off with my issue with this to start with then we will get to the love in.
Why was there random narration at the beginning & end of the film, but not narration before each persons story started? It felt very odd.
Also the protagonist (im not going to name them) there was never any reason as to why or how or what it was needed for. I need more back story for them please. I did love the very deliberate look of them but still, it was a very weird thing. I just needed to know more please.
The end after it all being so intense & on the edge of your seat well there were a few visuals that really made me laugh i loved it. It was such a clever visual & was a light relief after the drama & horror we had just watched for the last 2 hours.
The separate stories were all very good. As someone who liked vantage point, i enjoyed that. I do wish we had a few more peoples stories & information from it, but it was good showing how different people deal with trauma & grief & loss & responsiblitiy. Its very clever, especially in the last story which when you think youve worked it out its almost all but explained (except for what i said early which i cant go into without spoiling for you all).
Disney Adults! I laughed at that a lot.
We had a lot of jump scares & eery music just to set you off. It really made the heart race a lot. There was a dream sequence that then expanded which i thought i was safe at & then it did something & that freaked me out a lot. It also had some very haunting imagery & was gory & horrible when it needed to be. It was to tell the story & not just shock. Although lets be honest the run everyone does especially all those kids is very funny.
The empty house was one of the freakiest things of all. It had a different score & colour pallet to the rest of the film even when it wasnt as lonely. Also not so good with the forks. & why did no one in the super market question all the soup & chicken noodles being purchased? Seriously.
I kind of dont want to say anything else. This is very much an experience & a vibe & everyone ive spoken to who has seen this agrees not to talk much more of it until you know someone has watched it. It is an eery cinema experience & with a little bit more exposition at the start, it could have been a buzzer contender for sure.
