Penguins?! who said a film about a penguin & Steve Coogan… because thats my cuppa tea. So here i am for another advanced preview to watch the Penguin Lessons, which from the trailers i know is probably going to break my heart.
Screen 4 was pretty full. Mainly older people in here, less millennials that usual for a preview, but still a scattering.
Trailers, the Amateur (im going to know all of remis tricks before the film comes out) Warfare (looks so good) Thunderbolts*(already booked) Drop (looks so cool & its done by the death day lot) & Hello to Jason Isaacs walking around the uk.
& then the film started… yea that was adorable.
I cried. Im sorry i did. You can work out where the film is going if you watch it, but the entire last 10 minutes was just beautiful & painful. It hurt in the best way. I was glad it came to that, because it had to show the growth, & what everything meant to everyone.
Im sorry but who doesnt want a pet penguin? If you say no you are lying. My parents promised me when i was little that if they won the lottery, they would flood & freeze the garage so i could have one. Im still holding them to that 25 years later. This little penguin & its waddle was just the cutest thing ive seen on screen in donkeys years. It did rightfully steal the show.
Steve Coogan, local legend & celebrity is exceptional. Because he is best known for comedy you forget that he can do the serious stuff & the heart pulling stories, & he is remarkable.
I laughed a lot at points that needed laughing, especially at his friend & colleague, he was the kind of character youd usually expect Coogan to play, so it was nice for the roles to be reversed.
This film wasnt afraid to tell of the past & the horrors some people had to face & the difference in class. There were these uperty parents & people at this private school being all look at us, but then there was a very real family with troubles & issues, showing the class divide & how having very little can make you happy. Also there was some very disturbing moments where capture & torture & brutality were insinuated, which was nice. Im saying this a lot in life & in review at the moment, but we are all just human, we got one chance at this, lets all just be nice & get on with each other please.
The political message was important, but often took a back seat at points.
I love the whole saving a penguin to get a woman to sleep with you & then hes left with no sex & just a penguin, seeing the hotel staff with it like what the heck is this, that was surreal but brilliant.
It also shows all the different types of love & respect we have for people & how life does sometimes pass you by.
Basically this is sweet heart-breaking but with an important message for everyone, & the cutest penguin.
Who wouldnt want to see this film.
