Its been a busy week here, birthdays galore, lots of football & lots of people to see so a trip to the cinema straight after work is the perfect come down that i need before we all get going again. So a bit of Wes Anderson madness will help that. To quote my dad when he saw the trailer the hell was that, im not going to see that, to which i went ahh its a Wes Anderson, mums response to that was that explains alot.

I love the little balcony studio thats at the Connaught its so sweet & quaint & i remembered to bring my glasses this time. I mean im sure their screens are now okay after they updated their projectors to the new laser ones, but id still rather be safe & well after watching a film than not.

5:45 is a weird time to see a film, i understand that, so wasnt expecting a huge turn out. Also who in their masses goes to the cinema on a thursday (other than me). There was actually an alright turn out. Id say a third full. I know i cant see downstairs when i sit up but on the balcony there were 2 girls there who were younger than me, but no one else was. A few other people my age but mainly older. & it was clear the two girls were there to see Timothee’ in a bath (dont blame them) as they went whoop when he appeared.

Trailers, a weird french film (nope), King Richard (yes) House of Gucci (yes) & West Side Story (yes) & their panto trailer which is so over corny, maybe thats why my friends were like nah our kids wouldnt be up for that.

& then the film started… & if you want to know what goes on in Wes Andersons mind, this film i recon is the best example of it. Because it was all over the place. It was so weird & crazy.

So my main issue with the film is that we dont learn enough about the Actual French Dispatch magazine & its people. We learn about the three people with the main stories which cover the majority of the film & Bill Murrays character, but i wanted to know a little bit more as to why they picked those articles why all these other people at the paper who are big name actors there & how did they make the magazine tick. I felt a little left out of that & i think it would have given me more empathy towards them & what was going on & why what was picked was picked.

It was like watching three shorts. I mean there was nothing wrong with the three shorts. Each was a completely different Wes genre within itself & all worked. The transitions between the story being told in black & white & then people talking about the story s & feeling towards it or side notes being in colour was so clever & really was good.

Everyone be it a narration or acting in a story or being at the paper really did a good job, obviously some had more to do than others & some people were very good, but no one was outstanding. No one gave me a Ralph Fiennes Grand Budapest vibe to their performance ( that still the best performance Wes has directed in my opinion {bonkers}). But yea it was all very good but it wasnt sing from the roof top worthy.

The cartoon halfway through one of the storys was exquisite. Seriously stunning. & its just so randomly put in there, but it 1000% works. So clever.

I liked the credits at the end of the film too with all the different magazine covers that was clever & a nod to those in the past.

See this is hard to review because its 3 films in one all rapped up around the magazine. Most of each of the stories in explained in the trailer, without spoiling each ones ending, which i wont do for you on here, so theres not much else to say on this really until its out for home release.

I enjoyed it, i laughed & smiled & felt happy leaving the cinema. I just wanted more of an explanation as to why &what the magazine was from Wes, so it all felt more connected. The three stories are good & they are well worth a watch if you get it.

Wes is still an acquired taste.
