I think this might be the first time ive been to the cinema on my sister birthday (we celebrated at the weekend dont worry) but tonight is secret screening, which is also more important to me than the unlimited screening that happening tomorrow. Mainly because ive worked out odeons clues. So finger crossed ive got this right. I think its going to be rental family.
Id say tonight was 60% sold out which is pretty good. It is a wet cold january night where no one has any money so i can see why its not as sold out as usual. Proper mix of ages. & also this is one of the few times when the film name was revealed that no one left at the start or during the film i believe.
Trailers, No other choice, H is for Hawk, The history of sound & there was one more but i cant remember what it was for but it wasnt awards season bait.
& then the film started… I got it right it was Rental Family & it was sweet.
Now you all know i love a good cry at a film. I welled up a couple of times & did feel my tears drop at the last scene of the entire film, however the guy who was sat next to me at one point was full on blubbering. I did whisper to him of he was okay (strangers have asked me this in the past) & he said he was okay & got a tissue out. Bless him. It really can emotionally hit you this film. Id seen the trailer a few times to think actually this might be sad but beautiful. But if youve gone to secret cinema not having any idea at all it can hit you like a train.
I didnt actually expect to laugh as much as i did. I’m glad it had some moments like that because for most of the movie it was extremely serious & heart-breaking. So some moments of fun are always a nice little reset before heading back into the serious story & they grey area this film sometimes takes you to.
It also shows how some actors get swept away by a role. Brendan is a very good actor, i mean he has an oscar, but his character in this pretending to be other people for a service for different things & peoples needs was very good & it does make those he works with think about his point of view & their own lives & how they do get invested. Its quiet often why co stars often find a bond & keep it forever. Think Kate & Leo, Emma & Ryan, always destined to work together & be friends due to their roles. It just works. It also then showed how he changed both the clients life & his own life for good.
The montages were good but i did feel a little cheated we only really got to see 3 main storys with him & the clients. A few more would have been much better. I guess we did emotionally invest in what he did & how he helped but a few more would have been nice.
That little kid was adorable & the old guy was so sweet & i really felt for him & wanted him to find his inner peace.
Uperty people for put in their place at times which is always good. Got to love that in a film.
Can we appreciate the “detectives” arriving. When youve seen this you will understand. It shows how clever it all is.
Brendan is really picking the right serious roles for him now. Yes hes got some fun ones too, but that always makes me happy when an actor in real life & on screen has worked out their little niche & is owning it every time.
This was a sweet, soothing & repairing film about finding out what small things help others & what that then says thats good about yourself. Yes its awards bait for sure, but you could do a lot lot worse at the moment in awards season than this. IT made my monday night nice & chilled.
