This was the cinema film i nearly didnt see. Novocaine looked fun but various things just kept delaying me in going to see it & then i found out it wasnt going to be out for much longer, so it was this or predictable safe Statham… so i went for this.
Im going to be honest. Im writing this all in one go now just on the 9th May. I thought i had my preamble & first 3 paragraphs of the review done, but obviously i never hit save so im sorry i wont be tellign you who was in the screening or what the trailers were. My bad… See this is why i pre write peoples.
& then the film started… it was better than average & was fun.
So the poster & trailers basically say the guy cant feel pain at all, so i was expecting it to go full on throughout & really show it, but it took the end of act 3 for it to get grim. Nails & bones are not the best things in the world, but i was expecting a lot more action & fights in this film that we actually got. What we got was still fun, & it was a really clever way to do stuff. Like the traps in the home, very home alone, but done in a 2020s way. I just wish they had done more stuff like that. I get that you need to give people a break but i was expecting this to be near john wick levels of violence & chaos but it wasnt.
Once again this is proof that your online friends are your friends in real life, i love that. Thank you movie… Am i right besties?! Of course i am. I do like that also how stuff he had said was different, that maybe we do all live a slighly different online life to whats real but it was also nice to see that neither actually cared.
The villains were below average im afraid to say. Easy to pick off & take out except the big boss at the end, but he had to look hard to make those who had never seen this kind of film before, believe that we might not get the ending we hoped for. Yea didnt care if any of them made it out or not. Also stealign an ambulance very GTA. Infact so much of this film was very much like his video game he was playing, but was now a fish out of water.
This is going to fall into the die hard christmas category isnt it as its set at christmas, because the santas rob the bank that week. Was it even a bank or was it just a broker?
Quaid is a decent nepo, he has found his little niche & is owning it. 100 min films with some action & people you cant trust so he gets to pull a few punches. Get a few more under your belt kid & we can seriously take you as the next leading me of this genre.
I loved how he didnt eat & was petrified cos he couldnt feel anything that he would eat his own tongue, i loved that. It was funny, but then it was only like mentioned twice more & one of those was right at the end.
The school bullies being put in their place, i loved it. That got one of my biggest laughs of the entire film. As someone who was bullied at school i was like oh id love to do that to some of those kids now as an adult, some of them deserve worse than the hot source.
I loved how one of the cops just kept quoting tv shows & movies. I laughed a lot at them. A very nice touch & nod to the over the top films that came before this one. Think there was 5 in total.
There is room for improvement with this, but in terms of budget & what they wanted to do, this is the kind of film you put on with a lot of mates with loads of popcorn on a saturday night. It knows its place & is fun, but could have been outrageous & therefore didnt quite hit its mark.
