Cinema time, & the start of my almost full week off work. So lets go see what Eternals has to offer, despite the fact that the press ruined one of the two end credit scenes a full 3 weeks before the film came out. I mean i can understand stuff maybe the day before from someone over excited on twitter, but still. All of the press just blurted it out. Idiots. I mean considering Bond is such a well kept secret still, theres no excuse.
Pretty packed for the 7:30pm showing of this. There were people next to me on both sides. Id say a proper right mix of ages too. Mainly my age group who are the MCU originals, but yea all sorts of different people here for it.
Trailers, House of Gucci (yes) Matrix(yes) West Side Story (yes) Spiderman (yes) & some weird one about Donald Sutherland & the moon exploding, i think ill see it as Donald looked so sinister yea im up for that.
& then the film started… & as always that all i can say with a marvel film, however as the press ruined it…. It was okay, i expected more, i had lots of questions answered but still lots outstanding at the end.
It was too long. Im sorry it was. I know we had a lot of people to introduce & get to know, however we went over a few things a few too many times. I mean i liked that the main exposition dump was about 50mins in that was nice, we knew about some people before we knew what they had to do or face, but there was too much recounting things. Also Chloe Zhao is queen of cinematography which is fine, but how many into the distance staring moments does a super hero film actually need or looking at a horizon for longer than 5 seconds. I recon if you sort that all out you save at least 20mins of run time & with a film with 2 credit scenes, it makes it less of a struggle. For the first time in a while with a long film i actually did check the time before the third act started, just to see how much more we had to sit through. I think that says a lot considering i didnt do that for Bond or Dune.
All the new characters were introduced well & i did get a feel for them & they were all very well portrayed. A group of people in my screening actually cheered when there was the husband kiss goodbye, i mean we are the home of LGBTQ+ community of the UK in Brighton so that was nice. Everyone did act their arse off. I know its a Chan & Madden film, however Angelina wasnt just in it for 5minutes to then not be in it again, she was a big part of it & she kicked arse & rolled back the years once again.
Gemma Chan proved shes leading lady quality, it would be nice if more studios took punts like that & just went for it. She really was the heart & soul of the film & i think if anyone else did play that roll, it wouldnt have been do heartfelt. She nailed it.
As i said above very good to randomly dump the exposition 40 % of the way through a film, but up to that point i was sitting there with lots of questions. & then the film for the remaining 60% didnt answer as many as i thought it would going forward. Some bits were easy to see coming, however There are still some things which werent left as cliff hangers by the film that i want to know.
The Deviants were clever, but i didnt actually care about them as bad guys. We needed more information, & they dont turn up all the time. There skills are bloody brilliant (much like there mirror image eternals) however, when it comes to showdowns other than the ones in London & the Amazon, i didnt feel like i hadnt seen this before. & then the final showdown they were more of an after thought. They should have been better utilized, & considering its 2h30min in length this film, it didnt talk about them as much as we needed it too, or the celestials (we will get to that when i rewatch this).
I understand that Kit Harrington is now more for next time, but if you are going to see this film for him, dont bother.
So first credit scene, was ruined by the press. Only a small handful of people reacted to it. However the second end credit scene wasnt spoiled & that go such a reaction from the room. IT was one hell of a noise. Imagine the noise for the first had that been kept shhhhhhh for 3 more weeks. Darn you press of robbing the fans of that moment.
Overall i did enjoy the film. I think i need to watch it once more before fully giving judgement on it. There is a lot to take in with this film, but it would have felt so much better if we took in a few more things, & got rid of some repetition & staring into nothingness.
At least it wasnt a CGI sky beam that ended the film.
