Award season not festive season, & now for a film that i dont know much about which the trailer doesnt give to much away about called Cmon Cmon, lets see what its got to offer shall we. I see people on letterbox raving about it.
So i smuggled in my tea & popcorn (im getting good at doing that now, ive got the right size flask & everything) & there were quite a few people in the cinema, not enough to make it half full but enough that you though oh theres some people in here, maybe about 50. & id say half were my age & half were my parents age. Mainly couples ot ones too, but all the ones sat near the front which freaked me out a bit, am i meant to sit else where? i aint moving
Trailers, West Side Story (yes maybe the weekend or monday depends on when i can see Clifford with my friend), Cumberbatch & the cats (yes), The King man (yes) Spiderman (yes) & the matrix (yes) someone actually at the end of the matrix trailer actually did shout out in our screening hang on he died right (spoiler if youve not seen the first 3 sorry should have warned), but we all did laugh at them.
& then the film started… so there are films that are made for Award season & there are those that are good enough from earlier tin the year that get considered as well for award season & then theres other films. & then there is Cmon Cmon which is seriously the most Award season film ive seen in my life… & thats under stating it, it ticked all the boxes which im going to go through.
First of all random reading, poems & haikus throughout the film, okay yes it helps for those who arent quite with it to catch up a bit & fill in some grey areas but that happened. The poem about us all coming from a star for a short visit was a brilliant life Metaphor & i welled up. Someone was full on ugly crying in my screening at that. They were nice & pretty but i dont think the film needed them.
It was filmed in black & white, definitely an award season trope.
Phoenix was bloody good as the awkward uncle whos called in to help his sister & the family. He knows what to do in his role & he is very good from being calm, stressed, angry & lost in himself. He is bloody good.
His sister & her partner & her son is a nice story about mental health & what you would do for the ones you love, but still shes not that good a parent. IF that was in the uk & you just did that with a kid social services would be round it wouldnt jut be accepted. Nope no way.
The thing i wanted to know more about in the film was Phoenix job where he goes around america interviewing kid about their lives & what they hope for the future. I want to know why thats his job, it wasnt well explained. & also the most interesting bit of the film was the kids he spoke to & their stories. That was 10000% more interesting than his relationship with his nephew. Shame give me a film about that.
I understand he recorded & did sounds all the time, but we spent an extra 10mins with the kid doing it than we should have in the film.
The nephews problem was having stability & reliability not adventure. & not one of the adults in the film realised that at all. Im shocked that this was the case, they should have worked it out. I mean i dont have kids & i could see that. Adventures arent going to solve his life. I mean the screaming session at the end might have helped tho.
I liked that it wasnt New York you usually see in the film (there was a quick bit on the Brooklyn bridge & a glimpse of the highline) but other than that it was actual new york not movie new york. You know what i mean by that dont you.
It was a sweet & pleasant film, & its good communication lesson both for adults & kids, but would i have seen this film at another point of the year, if it wasnt being discussed in award season? Probably not. Im glad i have seen it & the beauty within which is the point of the film, & it is a good film, but it has just been made for award buzz with all the tropes in it.
