When do i have to start saying to myself that maybe i am a horror girl after all… because here i am going to go & see Backrooms on a friday after work on opening day. What has happened to me… well lets see how good it is.
Now usually a 5pm showing ive been to is often only having like about 20 people in it if im lucky. Todays showing was all but sold out. I say that as the seat next to me was empty. Millennials & Gen Z. However the couple a few seats down from me got told off by staff once for talking .The guy behind even said if he wanted a dvd commentary he would have waited for it to be on netflix. She also put her seat across the spare chair next to me. & then with 20mins to go when stuff get interesting the girl went im bored can we leave. What the fuck. They ruined all of our experiences &then left urgh.
Also can people please tidy up after the film, it was a complete mess afterwards. Always take your empty boxes & drinks with you its not hard.
Trailers, some weird family horror film where the guy falls onto knives in a dishwasher, scary movie, oak street & randomly also jackass ( i didnt know they were still making these but apparently its the last one).
& then the film started… i dont get the hype im sorry.
Im not sure i saw the same film you all are posting about & raving about on letterboxd, imdb, twitter etc. I can appreciate what some of you might enjoy, but i was just sitting there going hang on this is what people are going crazy about. Maybe you needed to have seen some of it on youtube first but i still dont get why your all like this is ground breaking other than the fact that the director is like 20 (i think… i might be wrong there).
The 90’s furniture & vibe was very much for the win. It just worked especially with those sofas. Im sure my dentist had one of them for sure. But that furniture shop was so 90s. The clothes at points werent always 90s. I dont remember seeing men in crop tops in the 90s or maybe they just didnt in my village & town in england.
I do get that its all about unpacking trauma but it just felt like it took a lot of weird metaphors to get there & then that help was never truly given out & it was then ignored. I do get that but it felt a little weird & forced upon us. It felt like we waited for more, which i think also mucked up the films pacing. I was hoping for so much more than this. It took a while for it to get going then paused for far far to long to basically go over some of the rules again before then being like well now were going to speed through this & then just wrap it up. The acts were weird lengths as well.
The end was out their & weird & then went odd then generic & then it felt like a cop out so then we can build for some more of these films, which just will probably leave me as baffled by it. It just didnt feel satisfying & wanted to set up for a sequel.
The acting from Chiwetel & Renate was as always what you expect for them. You can see why they have been oscar nominated in recent years. They are the glue that holds it together. The therapy scenes are the best scene in the movie. Although Hollywood is currently obsessed with everyone getting therapy. Is this them telling me that i should be going to it instead of screaming internally? Some of it is done for effect though that they are using just to pause & move on to the next scene.
Swapping from found footage to actual film & then monitoring is an interesting choice &would have worked much better if tit wasnt just dropped after one particular point (notice im not sure which act we were in). If your going for found footage, just use that for the backrooms.
The rooms were disturbing more so when they were empty than full. However some of the things found in the rooms were clever & funny. However the rooms were at their scariest at the opening of the film & not the rest of it. There was no jump scare per say but the tension wasnt enough for it either. The end explained some of the reasons why some rooms looked like that, but not enough lore was explained.
This film baffled me. It felt average & could have been better for tension & paranoia in our own minds. The two leads save it. I can see why some people like it but its not one i plan on revisiting.
