You all know me & horror dont have the best relationship, so me going to see this after a literal thunderstorm today (i saw the lightning hit a lamp post across the road from my office it was that close) & when i didnt enjoy talk to me is a big deal. I think im mentally prepared, but we will find out soon enough. I think the reason i didnt enjoy talk to me was that it was secret cinema & late at night.
For a thursday night its half full the 6:20 showing which is good. Proper mis of ages too, but a lot of familiar faces that ive seen at screenings before. So clearly its the filmphiles here.
Trailers, The Long Walk (ooooh) Weapons (oooh) Together (oooh) Materialists (weird one to throw in but still) & Caught Stealing (ooooh i think thats filmed here)
& then the film started… Yea maybe i need to revisit talk to me when im prepared for it, because this was an improvement.
Sally Hawkins decided to make this instead of Paddington in Peru… lets just say that i will never trust her as Mr Brown again. Bloody hell. Like theres crazy & delusional & then there was that, fuck a duck. Paddington your her only adoptee who has ever done well.
There was a death in this that had me & id say the 10 people around me laughing our heads out. It had been so intense & so freaky & then this death happens & you just laugh. You cant not. It does add a moment of oh ok but it also takes you out of that scared zone. You struggle to get back into it for the final part of act 3. You also know whats coming & yet in your head your still thinking about that moment.
I dont like body horror, weve talked about this a lot, so there were some parts of this that really disgusted me & were really hard to watch that i didnt enjoy at all. I get its meant to shock & be grim but thats just not for me. I get it is also good acting & part of the story but some of it, yea no thanks. It makes my skin crawl a little. Some bits were very disturbing too & you watched through your hand like i did at points.
The ritual, i understood, but if you never fully clocked it it would have left some people like hang on. Also there were some bits not seen to prove it would work. It was just a little bit too odd. I needed more explanation to it. I know why they wanted to do it but still, to wait so long to try, its a bit wrong. You really needed to pay attention which im guessing made it more intense.
What was with the Grapefruit reference? They kept saying it, but ive never heard of that being used as a safe word or anything else, it was just a bit stupid. Tell me why that was important please.
There were parts of this where i felt i was watching an evil sims house being made & people being put in there for torture & fun especially when it came to the shed, the pool & that bloody kitchen knife.
The story was good & it was just about getting a bit outstaying its welcome as it ended, but i just needed more i’s dotted & t’s crossed to make it a little more coherent.
Im glad ive seen this. This might be the kind of film that the academy randomly pick to nominate for a loas of films at the end of the year, that id then have to catch up on, but now ive done it im glad. But i will not be sitting down to watch it again, because this kind of horror isnt my thing. I appreciate the craft, & respect people who like this, but yea its not for me.
