Time for the 2020s to have another crack at a Rom Com & see if they can match the 90s early 00s level, because so far this decade weve had one film & thats it. So now its Love Agains turn to see if it can persuade me, to fall in love & melt my dark heart.
There was about 15 maybe 20 other people in my screening with me to see this film, i mean im guessing everyone either saw it earlier in the week or no ones bothered by it, its not been promoted that well if im honest.
I have a confession to say, i cant remember the trailers. I either really didnt pay attention to them or i have just seen them all before dosens of times. I kind of tune out now unless its the first time i see them on the big screen.
& then the film started… ooooh boy this was a bit of a slug of a movie.
I know romcoms are all about the cliché & the meet cute & all that stuff, but it was like everyone just went okay lets put this in, lets add that, lets do that & that it just felt fare to like oh okay yea of course this is going to happen to them next.
I get the whole Celine Dion thing i do, but ultimately it was a little bit random. I mean yes it taught him how to love, but i was sure there was going to be more to it than that & it was just like really, could have had a much better pay off that that. It would have been even more cliche i know, but i think it would have worked better.
The chemistry between the leads was weak, im sorry it was. Ive written better chemistry in a 1000 fan fic than this. Only once when they played basketball did i ever think there might be more that happens here but no it didnt. That hurt a lot. I ant to believe the romance, if you cant get the rest of the romcom right at least get the leads longing for each other on point. I get that shes grieving too, but still come on movie, make that believable at least.
Someone needs to make Russel Tovey more than just the friends or son or nephew in one of these movies. He is a wasted talent & its a real shame when he gets all the awkward bits in films like this. There was more of a relationship that him & the guy he randomly hooks up with at the start of act 2 that the rest of the film.
The ending took its self far to seriously, like it was a great rom com like Notting hill or Bridget jones, but no it just didnt deserve the right to do that, especially with cliché snow too. Nope movie you did not earn the right to do that, how dare you. Come back when youve earnt your stripes.
I laughed once, when the editor has a rant, i love that, it was brilliant, but so wouldnt work.
Grieving & letting go is personal i get that, but some of his behaviour is too stalkery. I get that he feels a connection but no mate that was far too much & she was right to react that way to him.
The swiping & getting modern dating correct, was right. I give the film that credit. It got the awkward tinderness vibe out of the way & Showed it up for what it is.
It was all just a little too cutesy for me & i just didnt believe the love the leads had for each other, even during the finale.
I know not all romcoms can be classics, but i think i laughed twice & didnt once feel romantic at all. Thats not a good sign for your movie is it.
