Spoilers
Tom Watch along night tonight, time for The Deep Blue Sea. Its been on the watch list for a little while, but its hard to find, thank god for Americans & different streaming services. Thats always good.
This reached its peak quite early on, when Tom took all his clothes off & started having sex, that was super hot watching the way their legs moved & how real it was. & if im honest after that first 10mins it never reached its potential. You tease this in the first 10mins of the movie & then you dont do that again. It wasnt like no one knew who Tom was either, Loki had made him a star & it was just like what.
I get that she is much younger than her husband & feels depressed i get that, but it was obvious from the very start that she wasnt going to end up with either of them. Even back then, her husband she was cheating on was loyal & still loved her & to the younger affair she was just fun until it got to serious & then he didnt want the responsibility. It was always going to be the case. & how she didnt spot that coming a mile off baffles me slightly, even back then.
The bits in the pub could be a scene from today, not just from the 1940s or 50s. The arrogances & the male dominance & assertiveness & owner. Never nice to watch at all.
The mental health side of her life & the fact she tries to kill herself, isnt dealt with at all, which is correct for the time period. Now it would be spoken about & wouldnt have that reaction. Youd notice the signs & see what was going on & tell them to speak at one point or not speak. You hope youd be able to point but i guess back then that wasnt a thing.
I get the whole whats better a comfortable loveless marriage or a passionate user relationship, i do get that & its interesting how they are both portrayed to show the light & shade in both & that they are both ultimately grey situations, or shades of blue based on the films title. So you want to be a small fish in a large sea or a big fish in a small pond?
The settings & aesthetics were lush, did make me feel like i was in that end/post war period of Britain. It did just have the right feel to it.
I ultimately wanted this film to be much more than just a womans affair, I wanted a few more levels to it, but it wasnt so i think i got more hyped for it than i should have been so might have been to harsh on it. I was expecting one movie & didnt actually get that. A little bit of false advertising on their part, but im glad ive now seen it. Maybe ill enjoy it more a second time around.
